MG TD TF 1500 - Latest TD List from George Merson

See http://www.ttalk.info/MersonList.htm for the latest list of TDs from George Merson. Please deal directly with George for any issues. I have nothing to do with the content of the list, I just host it. Remember to refresh your viewer. Bud

Bud do you happen to know if there is such a list for TC's & TF's? I'm printing out a copy to show TD owners at the MGRA T Type Tech Day which is being held here in Sydney on Sunday 1st November. Someone's bound to ask that question. (All T Type nuts welcome BTW. Inquiries on 0424 067 250). Cheers

There is a very comprehensive register of TCs on the MGCC Victoria web site - I think hosted by Richard Millington.
There is also a TD and TF register but I'm not as familiar with those as I don't have either of those cars.

Not that I know of, Peter. There used to be TF list handled by Jeff Payne, but the last issue that I received was in March of 2014. See http://www.ttalk.info/PayneTFList.html . Every once in a while someone comes up with another, but they don't seem to last. George Merson is to be thanked. I just wish that he weren't in the Wordperfect camp with Gord Clark. Bud

MGCC Victoria TF database.

I purchased my TF (TF4056) seven years ago and notified the register. (It wasn't on the database.)

I just rechecked and it is still not on the database. I don't know how up-to-date the TF register is of even Victorian TFs.

Ian, the past TF registrar Ian McKenzie passed away (last year?) and the new registrar Ralph Stewart is working towards a re-vamped website which hopefully will not be too far away.
If any Aussies are seeking history on their T type, feel free to contact me and I will see if I have anything: mbmagilton AT msn Dot com

Hey now Bud,

While I admit that I have used WordPerfect which is a modern text processing app since 1984, it was never designed to do database work. And nor was that doggy old MS WORD designed for it either. Both will SORT, but only to 2 levels.

As I indicated in an earlier message, it could be parsed in Quattro Pro, but I have only done that once a long time ago and have probably lost that skill.

Also, I could write a macro to pull out and place each piece of information, but again, that's a big job, and to be direct, I don't feel like doing it.

So we'll have to live with George Merson's dataBase and be thankful that at least, we have something, plus its kept up-to-date - a thankless job. If I'm not mistaken, the Payne list was at some point, integrated into the Merson list.

I have a whole bunch of additions and should send them to him ASAP.Thank for reminding me.

Just updated my details as George had me owning two TD's, 5801 & 5810. Be nice, but not so. Cheers

Happy to remind you, Gord. My only real problem with WordPerfect is that it's not in the html fan club for web pages. But, Word 2007 will open it. I'm just grateful to George for hanging in there. We 80+ year olds can still be operational. Bud

I am surprised that this does not seem to be part of the mission of the NEMGTR. Years ago they printed a roster of all the member T series cars and their owners-do they no longer do this?

George's list is indeed very useful for learning whether a car has survived, but its greatest limitation is that the numbering and ID information comes from the owners, and is unverified.

Mark II cars are my specialty, and Merson lists 176 of the 1710 made. But of these, 17 - fully 10% - are not supported in the Production Records as being Mark II cars, instead coming up as regular TDs.

It's easy to check the Mark II's made after TD/C16902, since those engines must be marked TD3 - of the 99 listed after that number there are 9 claimed Mark II cars that should all have TD3 engines, but - according to the Production Records - all have TD2 engines. These obviously cannot be Mark II cars.

It's more time-consuming to check the earlier cars before TD/C16902, since earlier Mark II engines were numbered the same as regular cars, as either TD or TD2 engines. But the Production Records show that of the 78 earlier Mark II cars on the Merson list, 8 are not supported as Mark II cars, based on the chassis numbers.

There is no doubt that I have found errors in the Production Records, but VERY few - perhaps 5 so far out of the many thousands examined. The Production Records are, after all, the manufacturer's official records of each car made - the scriveners did an EXCELLENT job!

Using the Production Records and the cars' physical characteristics I have identified a good many "Mark II" cars that are not genuine, but have also found two cars that I am convinced are genuine Mark II cars (and are so identified on their unmodified and original Guarantee Plates), but are not listed as Mark II cars in the Production Records. I think it is inevitable that with almost 30,000 records, there will be some errors, no matter how meticulously the records were kept.

I urge everyone to supply George with records of your cars, because that will give us the best possible picture of how many TDs have survived.

George gets his information from a number of sources, direct input from owners is probably the smallest of these. I'm not certain of who else knows about this list besides those of us this BB. I first learned of it in March of 2005:

Hello George,

I just came across a Word file in my TD folder that I've been trying to identify. Looks as if it probably came from you. It's a listing (15 pages, 62/page) of TD owners by Car No., Original Engine No., Present Engine No., Mk II?, Name and email. I see that my email address is one that I haven't used since Sept. '01.

I've recently opened a website called Ttalk.info to try to spread some of the word about TDs and TFs (T-ABC have enough). Would you allow me to put your data base on the site? I'll be happy to give you full credit for having compiled it and I'd try to get more entries and forward them to you. As I said, it's a recent site, still getting started, http://www.Ttalk.info/

Tom, Bud & others. I'll have to put this delicately... it's not a complaint, it's an idea inspired by George M's list. I know that some cars are not on that list... I drive one of them (TD 12498). Sent the details in several times, no result, so gave up. It's a big task so natural that some possible listings get lost in the shuffle. The info George M. does have is useful. Strikes me that what would be more useful (but maybe only in our dreams) would be a database that tied cars to owners at different points in time: most cars would have a series of owners. The Abingdon production records give day one. Then any other subsequent ownership or modification details could gradually be recorded right up to "parted out" or "restored by T Lange, 2015", each with a later date (even if only a year). In this fantasy, the list would work like Wikipedia... so users could add info (subject to editing). Of course we'd never get the whole career or all cars or may not even half the history of half the cars -- but it would be a way to record what owners do know and are willing to share. Yes but who could/would take hosting that on? Aye there's the rub... Peter

I'm not sure many of you understand that the Merson list is NOT A DATABASE. It is a text file.

IT CANNOT BE SORTED !! (Except in the most rudimentary way) It doesn't serve any purpose unless each piece of information is stored in its own little box, referred-to as a cell.

A dataBase has no value unless it can be sorted.

For each car, there would be a 'record'. Each record contains many pieces of information pertaining to that car. In techno talk, a record would be comprised of many cells.

A text file like the Merson file, doesn't do this. It neigh impossible to separate each piece of information because of the lack of commas.

The attached screen shot of the Merson list, in its native form, is an HTML file (not a wpf - WordPerfect file). It is 17.78 inches wide, and all the data is mixed up. Sometimes there are two cars on the same line. Over-laid in a red border, is an example of what that same example of data, in a dataBase, should look like.(sorry its not sharp - I imported it sharp!)

But at least it shows the difference between the Merson 'list', and a proper dataBase with cells of data.

Bud, if you want to e-mail me the the wpf file, I'll have a look at it.

Peter, I sent your posting to George. He just informed me that it has been done. Bud

Bud (& George) Thanks! George's list (with Abingdon records) would be a key resource for any T series database. Peter
