MG TD TF 1500 - Leaking fuel tank cap
Fuel sloshes out of fuel tank when driving after fill up. Yes, I know I could put less fuel in at fill up but that is not a fix. I purchased a new cork gasket that goes on the cap. The gasket that goes on the tank is the problem but cannot find a source for them. Does anybody know a source? It is 1 3/4 OD and 1/14 ID. I could make one but thought I would try this first. Thanks |

From the Frame UP GA236 Fuel cap cork washer 49 TC, steel filler neck and later T-Series Moss Number 293-600 https://mossmotors.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=&q=293-600+gasket Says it's in stock. |

They all leak if you fill the tank. Always have, always will. Archives are a good thing. Search there. Some have used a piece of a chrome/brass sink drain fitting to make a sort of baffle with some success. Been driving my TD since the 70s and just don’t fill it up. George |

I got mine from NTG in the UK, but I had a number of other parts to get also. FTFU is probably a good resource. Make sure you seat the gasket in. Also, check the pin (Screw) that holds the cap on the tank. These can get worn, as can the holes on the cap and tank. |

Even if it is sealed tight, it is vented and will still slosh some out. I've stufffed an O-ring into the tank filler. They'll last a few years and need replacing eventually. |

Easy fix. 1 1/2 " chrome tail piece found at any hardware store. I cut mine about 2 1/2 inches long and then cross drilled a 1/4 inch air hole about 1/2 way up the length. Insert it into the filler hole and the problem goes away.
Interesting side note; this tailpiece is not available in the U.K. as their plumbing is a different standard. After I posted this fix, years ago, I was asked to send some tailpieces to folks in the U.K. I did that and was rewarded with tele-tubby cookies for my grandkids. They were not available in the U.S.A. Tom |

Thanks everyone. Going to give the tail piece a try plus the gasket from Moss. I missed it when searching. |

The aluminum dipstick serves a similar function and also measures the quantity. I am not sure who is selling them now. As mentioned above, the cap is vented so the tank won’t airlock. You cannot make the the cap fluid tight. The best you can do is reduce the slosh..which not “topping off” does..and it costs nothing and has a negligible effect on range. I have a lot of respect for the 50 year owner experience George brings to the forum. Regards, Tom |

In addition to the baffle, I use a tissue wrapped around the filler neck and fixed with a rubber band or large o ring. Does not look nice, but prevents fuel running down the outside of the tank which looks even worse. Rgds Mike |
