MG TD TF 1500 - License Plate Resoration

Gentlemen,

I recently sent my vintage California license plates out to be restored and was quite pleased with the results. Here in CA, we are allowed to use original license plates from the same year of manufacture as our vehicles. For my 53 TD, I will use 1951 plates with a small corner tag that says ’53. I sent my plates to “Restorations by Dallas”. He removed the rust, straighten and painted my plates and year tag for about $170.00. and they look fantastic. I have no connection to this guy except recommend him firmly. He can do any state and vehicle plate. Give him a call for a quote.

Nice job
I just completed restoring mine while I wait on my engine. I had to buy new backs but was able to salvage the individual plastic numbers which got a coat of plastic primer, enamel primer and then a final coat of white enamel. Finally I had to drill holes to attach them to the backing plates and attach securely.
I probably spent €100 / $100 on materials and of course they took a lot longer than I thought. Happy with the result though.
These are original Irish plates.

I picked up a California black plate set for my 67 BGT. Rear plate was in very good condition, front was showing a lot of wear. I looked at the restoration shops but me being the cheapskate I am, decided to try to restore it myself.

Hard part was finding the Yellow paint to match. I came close. I removed the old paint, straightened a few dings, painted the plate in black and then masked off the outline of the letters with tape and sprayed on the yellow.

California DMV was happy. I think it came out well.

Top is the original, bottom is my restoration.

In New York, sometime around 1968(?), the plates was no longer issued by year. You just renewed it annually. After so many years, NY would change the color combo of the plates and you were issued a new set upon renewal.

You can register your antique car, 30 years old and older, with year or period correct plates but you cannot restore them. The claim is, this is to prevent fraudulent or counterfeit plates. However there are several caveats in registering with the period correct plates, ie: mileage, vehicle usage, transfer to another vehicle of different vintage.

Prior to you registering a period correct plate, NYS DMV does check its history before allowing you to use it.

I knew a guy who is into collecting plates. He found a set for me ... 15 bucks. The paint on the front one has taken a beating and I have repainted it a couple of times. I think powder coating would be the way to go and I might try that in the future.

Same guy found me these for the TD. Still in the original packing along with the very hard to find 52 metal tags ...they used 51 plates for 52. 100 bucks.

California allows any plate of the black/yellow or earlier to be restored. In fact, they insist on it if the plate is damaged or difficult to read. They do not allow newer ones to be restored because they were made with reflective paint.
