Thanks to all!

The articles are fine - so I can give the instrument into the hand of an elder watchmaker.

The early TD's had Chronometric Tach and Speedo.
They are both essentially clocks. The TC time clock is quite similar to the TD clock. Anyone interested in a good history and some useful maintenance points on the Chronometrics can google "mg tc chronometric" and look for "hells-confetti.com" to click on in the search results.

A friend who collects clocks and pocket watch type watches told me he uses the silicone in an aerosol spray can as a clock (and watch) cleaner. Nothing special, the silicone spray from hardware or auto parts stores. Sprays it out of the can to clean clocks, and carefully applies from a paper clip or whatever to clean more delicate clocks, like the clock of this topic. Whatever the carrier is makes for the good cleaner, and the silicone left after dry is not enough to oil the clock, or cause a dirt attraction problem, but does leave a protective film.

The article mentioned in posts above (the one ending in pdf) talks about where to avoid getting oil, like on the squirrel cage gears, and electronic parts. Show your elder watchmaker the Chronometric article, he will want one to work on.

that might be helpful.
