MG TD TF 1500 - Lucas Magnito
Just saw this on another forum. Fellow bought a 48 TC that had been setting for 56 years and this is on the engine. First one I've seen. PJ

Paul the only problem with Lucas Magneto is the tack drive won't fit. I use a Sintilla-Vertex which allows me to the run the tach. You don't have to worry about oily plugs the mag will jump a 3/4" spark in air. Butch |

Butch. I talked with you at GOFWest 2015 re mags. Do you have any available bases or complete units? Joe Hunt in Sacramento can build me one if I bring them a base to either use or a distributor to copy from. PM me at Salsbuyrocketman at yahoo dot com Cheers Bill Chasser TD 4834 |

Hi Bill. I've got an extra Lucas mag available. I'm going to use the other one on my Y since it doesn't have a tach. I also have a Vertex I'm going to rebuild when I have time. Butch |

I have a TD. I had no idea that TC's ran on magneto's. My Cessna airplane runs on twin magneto ignition systems and two spark plugs per cylinder. One ignition system can crap-out, and the aircraft will keep on flying on the other mag. Part of the pre take-off checklist is to run-up the engine to 1700 rpm, switch off mag #1, check for a 100 rpm drop; back to both mags; switch mag #2 off, check for 100 rpm drop, then switch to both mags for take-off. I've had the alternator die on me in flight twice over 36 years of flying my little airplane. I noticed it when the radios got weak, I looked at the ammeter and it was stuck on zero, so I turned off the master switch. Comforting to know that the engine sparks off of magnetos. |

TCs don't run on Magnetos as stock. They are an aftermarket item. |
