MG TD TF 1500 - Main rear bearing housing modification

I have been advised that MG released a Service Note on this subject that involved making an additional drilling that rectifies the issue of the leaking Achimedes Screw on the crankshaft.

Dont have any details, maybe someone in the brains trust is aware of this.

Graeme,

Believe the Service Note was put out for the MGA engine, not the XPAG but it's applicable to the XPAG also.

On the rear main bearing is a drain pipe that returns the oil from the Archimedes screw to the sump/oil pan. There's three things you can do to this tube to "possibly" help the oil drain faster: 1) remove the tube entirely, 2) shorten the tube by an inch so it's not submerged in the oil while draining or 3) drill a hole or cut a wedge out of the tube (facing away from the crankshaft counter balance)

The most effective: buy a drip pan 8^)

Many thanks, I was aware of the drain tube modifications. I have been led to believe there is a more effective fix when and if I get around to pulling my engine for the fourth time I will send my housing off to the Aus engineer that is aware of this. When I know moreI will advise.

Thanks, the following included in your reference by David might be the info I was after, thanks.

"Some people have removed or cut off the pipe that extends from the oil trough in the rear main bearing cap in an attempt to cure the leak at the rear. The rational for this is that the early B series engines used in the MGAs and early MGBs have the same rear main seal arrangement sans the pipe that extends down into the oil in the sump. Others have drilled additional drain holes into the trough to provide more drain capability."

Graeme,

That was the info I gave you up above.

I agree however this is the first instance I have heard: "Others have drilled additional drain holes into the trough to provide more drain capability."
