Roller rockers! What exactly is the oil filter? Original or modern with hidden spin-off? Beautiful job! George |
George Butz |
Thanks, George. The oil filter is a spinoff sold by Abingdon spares..I painted it and added the decal.. |

Congrats, looks like things are going very well. |

Beautiful job Bill. I've seen quite a few bell housing on TDs that are painted silver. Chris Cooper's site list the original color as engine color. Did you go with silver as a personal preference or did certain years come with silver paint or natural finish? Nice shop floor BTW. Tim TD12524 |

YEA! Glad to see that you chose Michelin tires! Congratulations on a great job, can't wait to see it when you are finished! |

I went with silver because that was the color it was when I got it. Not sure if it is original. This is an early car and lots of little things seem to be hold overs from the TC or were things changed later on in production. For example, it was originally two toned. The body was metallic green (Chris calls it Ash Green) and the wings, splash pans, and other bolt on stuff was Woodland Green. Thanks for the complement on the garage floor, but there are two things I don't like about it......if you drop a nut, washer, Woodruff key, etc it just disappears, never to be seen again. Mechanics creepers and chairs, even those with the bigger wheels, sometimes catch on the raised circles. I have been thrown off the rolling chair more than once. |

Just a little under 500 after mine Bill (4139). I remember mine looking like that back in the 70's. I am hoping to strip it down in the near future for a restore back to as original as I can. Yours is looking great I have never seen a factory two tone TD. Any documentation on the colors? |
Bruce Cunha |
Yes, when I was disassembling the car about a year ago, Chris Couper and I had a long exchange of emails and pictures about this issue. In some cases the colors were easily discernable. For example, the cowl was peeling in some places and the original metallic green was present. The area where the three labels had been was particularly fresh. On the wings where they fit against the body there was a strip of an inch or so which was Woodland Green. We checked and in both areas and there was nothing but black primer underneath. I went through each of the remaining body pieces with 1000 grit wet/dry. As it turns out, the bucket, bonnet and gas tank are metallic. Chris has determined that this is the "Ash Green", probably used only in 1950. The remainder of the parts, including the grill was Woodland Green. The interior was Apple Green. All of this has been documented with photos. We sent appropriate pieces to the regional PPG lab and got good matches.....So Ash Green/Woodland Green. I am about 95 percent sure that I am going to repaint in original colors. This may be a little funky for today's taste, but I think it is pure 30s to 50s British. I am fortunate that it remained with the same lady for over 40 years and had only one respray, and a cheap one at that. |

Bill, just a suggestion that might make life easy in future: the bolts of your front Girlings are easy accessable now but when the fenders are on, it is a tough job to get those inner bolts out, especially the one that also holts the engine stabelizer. I took the heads of hexagonal socket bolts and welded them on top of the original bolts. Only the inside ones. And yes, sometimes these Girlings need a repair. |

Sounds like a good idea! |

Bill, I'm jealous. If I hadn't just done the A I'd be tearing into my TD... Where in NC are you? |

This is a picture. A little bit additional panel beating to set the head free accessable.

I live in Oriental, NC, about 45 minutes from New Bern.... |

Interesting Bill. Has Chris been able to document any other TD's with factory two tone? |
Bruce Cunha |
Not sure.... |

I am following this thread with interest as I am not aware of any factory 2 tone TDs. You are aware that the tub was painted separately from the fenders. One paint was lacquer and the other enamel. There were often color variances, and they each aged differently. I have seen several original paint TDs, and there is a noticeable variation in the color between the tub and the wings. Be well, David |
