MG TD TF 1500 - Manifold Coating?
In beginning to clean the exhaust manifold in the bead blaster I have uncovered the remnant of a silvery, possibly aluminum coating. It seems a bit thick for paint. The coating is also on the brackets that hold the manifold to the engine. Would this have been done at the factory? Thanks, Bill

Another view. There even appears to some on the mating surfaces.

Yes they were " Aluminized", Most today ceramic coat them to a close to aluminum silver. AlsoI highly recommend ceramic or "Thermal" coating to the new piston crowns, to prevent piston damage due to being slightly lean or a poor quality tankful of fuel,as well as dry film coating of piston skirts to help prevent scuffing. Bill - I wanted to keep the factory aluminized color and surface of the exhaust manifold on my TF-1500. So I followed Chris Couper's advice and sent the exhaust manifold and brackets to Brian Bendix at American Stripping Co, Inc. 602 Warehouse Way Sacramento, CA 95826 (916) 387-9933 http://www.americanstrippingsacramento.com/metalSpray.html American Stripping blasted and aluminized my exhaust manifold for a reasonable price. 7-day turnaround time. I wasn't confident with local shops that claimed to be able to aluminize. I'm happy with the results. The manifold was aluminized in mid-2014. Photo below was taken today. I spilled a few drops of oil on the manifold soon after I installed it. They burned off and the surface retuned to white. I need to see if I can get a commission. :-) |

Bill, May be place a straight edge across the mating exhaust manifold surfaces to check that they are in fact in line and flat. The T type manifolds are often not true and need checking before fitting up to the cyl head. This can give rise to the exhaust manifold gasket 'blowing'. Lacquer Thinners and a tooth brush are useful in cleaning the applied 'hot aluminised' surface of the manifold if grease or dirt come into contact. Again,it wll dry up white.
