MG TD TF 1500 - Metallic grating sound

I am getting this from the rear LHS when taking moderately fast LH corners in my TF. Have inspected visually and can't see any obvious reason for it. New wheels and hubs. New U/Js. I'm thinking its an axle issue. Any ideas please?

Loose brake shoes that contact side of drum when cornering?

Axle not a bit loose?

Dave,
When you said "visually indpected",did you take the drums off ?? Or was it an outside visual inspection ?

Dave,

Had the same issue after having the brakes done. Turned out the hub nut was torqued way short of specs. I don't recall the torque specs. Will only cost you a cotter pin to check.

I'm sure someone on the forum could give you the torque specs.

Man I totally reuse cotter pins. OK. I said it :-)

Thanks guys. Yes I only did a visual external inspection. The next step will be to strip it down and take a look. But better to do it now with your ideas on what to look for as well as mine. I always change the cotter pin / split pin on critical parts but not necessarily on the others (like the carb linkage).

So now have stripped it down and inspected. Brake drum removed but nothing out of place or scuff marks of any kind, so can rule that out - worth checking though, and reminded me not to replace the rubber plug in the drum. Without it you can adjust the brakes without removing the wire wheel. Next I removed the split pin and found the castellation was displaced to the left of the access hole in the hub and axle. Tightened the nut to 150ft lbs (max on my torque wrench), which requires the wheel refitting without the spinner (or drum). It moved so that the castellation was now to the right of the access hole in the hub. Luckily I could still fit a new split pin. Put it all back together and will give a test run this afternoon. If that hasn't fixed it, a more complete strip of the hub and axle required. There remains the usual slight play and clonk when I rotate the hub back and forth, but whether its excessive I don't know.

Dave.

May be not the problem, however I had experience with a TF years ago with a very worn Pinion Bearing in the diff. area causing a metallic scraping sound. If the bearing finally seizes,it tends to ruin your day as the
break up of the bearing then destroys the crown wheel and pinion! Just a thought.

Yes the horrible thought that it might be the diff itself crossed my mind - it was for that reason that I mentioned the clonk when rotating the hub back and forth. There was oil at all in it when I got it. Just waiting for the rain to finish before going for a short test run. I had in mind changing the back axle ratio to 4.55:1 and have the parts, but didn't want to do it quite yet.

Now taken a test run and the noise is still there. It happens when I put my foot down coming out of a bend - a rattling metallic sound. More dismantling required.

Exhaust hitting somewhere?

Good idea, but wrong side of the car, I'm sure the noise is coming from the left rear or centre. RHD, so could be either.
