MG TD TF 1500 - MG TD Wheel Rims

I recently purchased a 52 MG TD which had a conversion done from steel perforated wheels to wire wheels. The car also came with the original wheels that were removed from the car. My dilemma is whether I should keep the steel wheel rims which would allow the car to be restored to its original configuration, or to sell them and be done with it. I've been researching them on line to try to get a value for them, but have not located any ads for them anywhere. Is this because they are rare and hard to come by?

I don't know of anyone who has converted back to steel wheels after having wires. Your car is beautiful!
I would guess you could get $25-30 each for your old wheels. I tend to keep my old stuff and never end up using or selling it (Until I move).

stay with your wire Wheels, your car looking realy good.
I wish I had wire wheels for my TD

If anyone is looking to sell old steel wheels, I would be interested in getting a spare set. I'm one of the few vintage racers still using full fenders and steel wheels.
Kurt Byrnes

Thanks guys! The only reason I could think of to change back is if someone were a purist and wanted the car exactly as it was from the factory. I even have the old brake drums attached.
Kurt..If I decide to sell I'll post it. I'm in NY.

However, should you decide to convert back, contact me. The wires look stunning on your 52 TD.

Bill.....I would never convert back, I'm thinking about a buyer should I ever decide to sell (which I have no plans to do).

I have 3 wheels with cracks. Have been looking for someone selling.
I would love to get yours, because I can not drive on these.

Who and where are the wheels for sale?
PLEASE, Just rebuilt engine and really need to drive the TD.
I just do not trust the ones I have.

Shoot me an email or PM
thx

There is a thread on the MG experience stating that Abington Spares is considering a run of TD steel wheels, but at $200 each, that is steep.

Here is a set of 4 on ebay for $150 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-MG-TD-Solid-Non-perf-15-inch-Steel-Wheels-Set-of-5-/272597860530?hash=item3f781940b2:g:zyYAAOSw241YWTpi&vxp=mtr

Yea I saw that, but there's a reason why MG went to slotted wheels around 1950. the brakes were overheating and needed more air flow.

I've got three spare slotted steel wheels I'd sell for $40 apiece plus shipping. They all need blasting and painting. I can be contacted at dmeadow "@" juno.com.
David Littlefield

Could not afford the $200 for new ones.
The ones on EBay are not slotted so for early TD

Have a couple reply's I am looking into.
thx all.

If you do buy usedsteel wheels, MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE ROUND AND TRUE !!If yhey are not true, you will never be able to balance them

A 50 year old plus wheel will almost certainly not be round and true. To get to four good ones I worked through 8 and even then had to get the four I use straightened. Still now 2 of the them are 8/10.

By the time you budget for that + blast and paint + the security of getting something truly round and straight... I would go with $200 each. After all you are spending half that at least just for the tyre...

Dave, that may be true in some cases, but if the wheels do not need blast and paint, have recently come off a car which has had a wire wheel conversion or have recently been balanced on the car they came from, I don't think there's much to worry about.
Mike I

If you do in fact buy used steel wheels, please keep us posted how they are when you get them mounted on your car.

Thanks,
Steve
