MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF Correct tire size and Brand

At the risk of asking questions that have been asked before, can someone tell me the correct tire size, brand and dealer for MG TF tires...a radial with the vintage tread design would be perfect!
Thank you,

Jack - plenty in the archives. Agreement seems to be that brands are pretty much all the same in 165x15 when you are looking at an import tire, but Vreedestein and Michelin, pricier, stand out.

I buy mine at Tire Rack or one of the tire chains, and take whatever they have that's affordable. Nanking, Hankook, whatever - they usually last 10 years no matter how they are driven!

Opinions differ on whether to use tubes - see the archives for that can of worms...

I have been using the Vreedestein Sprint Classic 155 SR X 15 82 S
Love these tires. Bought them from internet dealer in Hersey, PA. I think I paid about $65 each with shipping to Mi.I use tubes because Orig.wire wheels do not seal.

I got 165X15 Firestones from Summit Racing. They look nice with a period look. PJ

Jack,

Originally TF tyres were Dunlop 550x15,cross ply.

The only closest Dunlop tyres produced in UK now are 590x15 which I purchased last year from Vintage Tyre Supplies.

Reaiise you seem to be after radial tyres.

I also bought Vredestein sprint classic 155R15 with new tubes last week because I like the old school look - but what is the right pressure? The dealer did not know.

You can choose a pressure to suit your comfort and driving style. 26 to 28 PSI is common. Maybe 30 if you like to corner fast.

Thank you Matthew - I will try that.

i have Vredestein 165 HR15s they are great. Right look and great tyre.

Remember when looking at the options to choose the higher tyre heights - not just look at the width.

A 'taller' tyre will give you better top speed per revolution...

Dave,
Are your Vredesteins new directly from Vredestien or are they Coker ??

What are the groups thoughts on Coker's wide white walls?

White wall should not be present at a sportscar.

Jim,

I bought white walls for my TF from http://www.dbtires.com/tires.html

Cost will be about the same.

These are radial tires with wide whites put on as the final step by this company.

A member of this board recommended them. They look nice on the car and I like the tread pattern since it resembles a little bit like a bias ply but with the safety and handling of a radial.

What headlights are those on the TD in the Paris Show film?

Steve - can't remember who I got them from - one of the online retailers in the UK that delivered to Ireland. Paid about €100 each from what I remember.

Wasn't Corker though :-)

A few years ago I visited the British Motor Museum where the build records for the MGTF cars are available to be viewed by visitors to the museum. I had the car number for a TF 1500 that was at that time owned by another club member and now by myself. When recording the information for the car I noticed a small red dot towards the end of the build record. Other cars also had this small red dot but not all. I asked the person who was in charge if she knew anything about the red dot. She did and I should have known if I would have looked where the cars with the red dot were to be delivered. Red dot means "White Wall Tires" for cars going to the USA. So the bottom line is some sports cars were born with white wall tires and my personal opinion is TF's look great with white walls. The only problem is with radial tires the widest white wall available for our cars is 2 1/4 inch wide. However if you can live bias ply tires a 3 inch wide white wall is available from Lucas Tire Co. and that is the correct width for the year 1955.

Fair enough, they certainly look wrong to most Europeans, but we can all do what we like with our cars. I fitted 165VR15 Blockley tires and I like the look and the grip.
