MG TD TF 1500 - MG TF Water Pump pully / Fan Loose

I have a coolant leak. Seems to be coming from somewhere near the water pump. Is pretty spectatular when the engine is warm.

From previous posts it looks like the internal seals for the pump can wear out and there is a bleed hole at the base. Sounds like my problem.

I have the radiator out.

As I started to examine the water pump I noticed that the drive pully and therefore the fan seem very loose.

Pretty sure that this abnormal but have no reference point.

So before I order a new pump...chasing my leak...

What do you think ? Terminal anyway ?

It could be the pulley wobling on the shaft if the key was missing but much more likely to be a failed bearing in the pump. And yes ...it's terminal.

I would recommend either Butch Taras or From the Frame Up for a quality replacement in the States. I have no idea who does a quality replacement on your side of the pond.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Will get what Moss have to offer. Glassi Gold I think is the brand. May be the only option.
Cheers.

Chances are you will have to grind the flank by the timing chain cover as all the replacement seam to be a bit large at this point.

Dave. MGbits has a heavy duty water pump with a brass impeller. I would give them a call.

I have been pretty pleased with their products.

Just a bit more than moss UK, but it looks like a better pump.

Give Paul a call or drop him an email.

I would replace the pump and see if there is still issues with the pulley. I have seen a pulley that was not tight wear and wobble, but most likely it is the bearing.

And follow Dave's good advice: Keep your belts loose.

In my experience you’re waisting your money buying a cheap Moss replacement. You’ve been given some excellent options. It NIKE TIME … just do it!

Recently my TD pump started to drip but there was no play or noise from the bearing. Fitted a Butch Taras one with 6 blades and so far so good for 4 months of driving.

Ditto what John said. No leaks, improved cooling. Jud

Thanks guys for your advice on this. Just following up. I ordered the Classic Gold pump from Moss. I didn't see the suggestion from you Bruce until after unfortunately.

I had to grind off a small bit of the casting as B W Wood noted. I also had to enlarge the bottom left hole to get the bolt to align with the hole in the block.

Nothing too outraguous as I was not expecting it to be an exact fit from the comments.

Good news is it worked. No more leaks. Pully runs smooth. If it fails I know where to go now for a heavy duty version.

Thanks again.
