MG TD TF 1500 - Mirrors

Because I declined to drill holes in my newly painted fenders to attach a set of mirrors I have, I ordered a set of these windscreen mirrors. They look nice in the photos, easy to adjust and don't do any damage to the car. The little postage stamp mirror inside isn't going to cut it. PJ

Good call. You will be much happier with windscreen mirrors.
Larry Brown

I have those and I use them. The car came with fender mounted ones also. I may remove them and fix a small plug in the hole. They get bumped a lot.
MAndrus

How big are the mirrors? I am looking for something bigger as the fender mirrors don't show anything, even with convex glass. And don't get me started on the puny dash mirror.

These also look like easy on/off with just the wing nut holding them on?
Christopher Couper

Paul, thanks for the pics. I ordered a pair of those last Friday and am awaiting delivery. They look like just what I want. Jud
J K Chapin

Paul,
Where did you order the mirrors from?
D.C. MacNamee

These are Standard Fender Mirrors with an additional chrome mounting bracket. The Mirror bolts to the Bracket. The Bracket is held to the Windscreen by the Wingnut. I put the Windscreen down a lot....and all I have to do is rotate the Mirror 90 degrees. I carry an Open End Wrench specifically for this. Moss sells them, but you have to buy a Mirror to get the Bracket. It would be easy fabricate that bracket, but by the time you had it plated you would probably spend just as much.

Windscreen Mirror.. RH.. Convex.. 165-511 $47.95
Windscreen Mirror.. LH.. Convex ..165-512 $47.95
Windscreen Mirror.. RH.. Flat..... 165-513 $47.95
Windscreen Mirror.. LH.. Flat..... 165-514 $47.95

Although a bit on the small side I have always liked this Honda motorcycle mirrors which I fitted to my TD many decades ago. The allow the screen to be folded with out any interference from the mirrors. Left side shown below.

I find the "Military style" mirrors from SVC quite nice. You can mount them vertically or horizontally.

Hi Declan.

I have exactly the same mirrors on the TF but didn't appreciate they are Military Style. I can't remember who I purchased them from but it wasn't SVC. I found the clamp that slides on the circular bar was a wee bit loose so slipped a piece of shrink wrap sleeve over the bar. It has worked perfectly. I suspect the Stafford ones will be fine though. I have used them and their products were first class.

Cheers

Mr. MacNamee, I bought them from Little British Car Co. $40.76 ea. Just give them a Moss part number, you save a few bucks by buying from them, but it takes a little longer to get them. PJ
Paul S Jennings

Jan,
Yes I agree with the quality of Stafford products-anything I bought from them was first class. No shrink tube was needed.
Here's a link for those who are not familiar with SVC.

Paul, what Moss Part No. did you use when you bought the mirrors through LBCarCo? Those adapters are very interesting. Bud
Bud Krueger

The adapters are a good idea, but if you don't plan on putting the windscreen down (see BROKEN GLASS thread) the mirrors can be put through the curved slot that the windscreen mounting bolt is in.

Bud,
Moss part numbers for windshield mirrors.
165-511 RH Convex
165-512 LH Convex
165-513 RH Flat
165-514 LH Flat

I ordered a flat face for the left side and a convex for the right. My truck mirrors are set up that way and I like that combination. PJ

Paul S Jennings

Thanks, Paul. Steve, I do the 'bugs in the teeth' bit around Town. Especially in parades. I have a pair of the Harley style that fit into the curved slot. On the left stanchion I have a TC-style mirror that's been on the car since at least 1958. Bud
Bud Krueger

You could make the adapters very easy and then have them chromed. Problem there is, by the time you have the brackets chromed, it would be cheaper to buy the combo set from Moss or one of their distributors. I can find no part number for just the chrome bracket. PJ

I have Harley Davidson motorcycle mirrors on my 51 they fit right in the hole on the windshield using a spacer and cone washer total cost 60 bucks for the pair. they work great and look great.
TRM Maine

Well I got my mirrors today, the left one is perfect and looks nice on the car, the right one has a dent and two scratches on the back of the mirror. Wrote Jeff about it and I'm sure he'll act on it. PJ
Paul S Jennings

I just received and installed mine on Wednesday. Perfect condition - look and work great. 60-70 miles tomorrow to give them a road test. PJ, I'm sure Jeff will take care of you. Jud
J K Chapin

Jeffs working on it now Jud. I sent him some photos and he already sent them off to Moss. It looks like it was done before the mirror was packed. Who knows. PJ

I find the fender mirrors rather useless and wish they had never been installed. If it is for safe driving and not for show, a panorama mirror fixed on the original mirror gives a very good view, and with a bit of foam rubber behind the right side of the mirror, it gives a better view of left side of the road.

What I noticed during yesterday's drive that the mirrors seemed to end up pointing too far downward after a couple of miles of driving. I kept adjusting them but they'd slip back down. I thought I was adjusting the ball socket on the mirror back but it turned out that I was adjusting the bracket that is attached to the windscreen pivot. No matter how hard I tightened the wing nut I couldn't get the bracket to not rotate just enough to throw off the mirror adjustment. So, this morning I made an effort to prevent that rotation. I found two flat washers that fit the windscreen stud and that have an outer diameter just slightly bigger than the base of the wing nut. I coated the back of the washer with old fashioned cloth friction tape and trimmed it so that it wouldn't show with the washer in place. I inserted the washer between the wing nut and the bracket face with the friction take toward the bracket and tightened up the wing nut. The friction tape seems to have eliminated the tendency of the bracket to rotate on the stud but I haven't road tested it yet. I'll let you know if it is a success. Jud

Yngve: Which mirror do you use and how do you fasten it to the dash mirror?
Christopher Couper

Still some movement so I'm still working on it. I'd have thought the lower hole on the bracket would fit snuggly on the pivot stud to eliminate any movement but - no, it's big pretty useless hole. Jud
J K Chapin

Jud,

Do you have the cone in place.

Jim
James Neel

Yes, the cone is still in place an I suspect that's what the bracket is rotating on. Jud
J K Chapin

Jud, as you can see, the washer and the hole in the bracket are of a different size, with the washer being smaller, something I noticed right away. I'm going to make thick polished stainless washers that have a snug fit in the hole and that should eliminate any movement. PJ
Paul S Jennings

John Quiter,
I see your windshield bracket has two holes (vertically). Mine has the same with "cheese head" screws in them...do you know what they are for?
Jack
jackdiehl

I didn't notice them Jack...but see them now. I have not seen holes there before. I suspect some other idea for a Mirror mount.
M Brand

Looks like a POs modification, possibly for mirrors or wind wings. Not original to my knowledge. PJ
Paul S Jennings

I searched for "broken glass" and only came up with broken spokes??? is there danger of breaking the windshield when driving with the screen down?
TIA

Just got my replacement mirror to replace the scratched one from LBC/Moss. They just sent a complete mirror assembly not just the damaged mirror. You can't ask for any better customer care than that! PJ
Paul S Jennings

Lazarus has a mirror mounted in the location. I don't have a good image of it at the moment. Someone referred to it as a TC mirror. I'll try to get an image of it shortly. Bud
Bud Krueger

Hi Chuck,
Quite the contrary.....judging from the recent threads on damaged Windscreens. Several people had their Windscreens damaged while the Windscreen was erected. Of course, in some cases it may very well have prevented personal injury. The Glass is held securely in the Frame. There is probably less flexing of the Frame when lying flat...than with the wind pushing on it.
Mike
M Brand

Very pretty Paul. But how does one lower the windscreen?

Gord Clark
Rockburn, Qué.
Gord Clark

Jim, I removed the cone washers so the big hole in the bracket now fits semi-snuggly over the pivot washer. This has eliminated MOST of the bracket movement. Actually, because there is now a great deal more contact area between the mirror bracket and the windscreen support, it may have eliminated all the movement. I'll be out for 70+ miles on Saturday and will let you know. I also don't know if removing the cone washers will have any unintentional consequences. Jud
J K Chapin

Jud, with the cone washers out, I would not lay the windscreen down and drive the car. The cone washers keep the windscreen from flipping up and flying back by locking it into position. I would not like to be in the car if that flies up! PJ
Paul S Jennings

Paul, I knew there had to be a reason for them. I'll keep the cone washers in the tool box against the rare event that I put the windscreen down. It's very easy to reinstall them. Thanks. Jud
