MG TD TF 1500 - Modified clutch lever inspection
Hi Gang I have a question for those of you that have moved the hole on the oil pan mounted clutch lever to change the pedal throw during clutch operation. The lever was originally cast for a machined and drilled boss where the clevis pin is inserted for attaching the clutch link rod. The recommended change to drill a new hole one half inch further toward the pivot puts the new hole in the thin area of the lever. With the new hole drilled at this location there is little material left for wear. Has anyone inspected their modified lever for wear, bending or potential breakout/failure of the remaining material after several years of operation? I am considering making the change but concerned about potential for failure. Thanks Dick (20102) Safety Fast |

It's a good question. I made the same mod and wondered myself. I think there is still enough material left for it not to break there, but wear could be an issue. I suppose it depends how much you use it. I also fitted the Moss adjustable rod. Dave H |

Dick, You can always install one of my uprated stainless steel adjustable clutch rod kits. Then there is no play or wear due to the rose joints. Both rods are available separately with rose joints on each end. The second photo shows the "Keep your pedal box clean" clutch rod gaiter kit. Regards Declan ![]() |

Made the mod a least 10 years ago and have had no issues. Have not inspected it though. The mod definitely works! Randy |

Hmmm, Very interesting modification Declan, professional and clean. Are they aircraft fittings? Been flying for over 50 years and those fittings look very familiar. Have to think about this. PJ |

Dig it! Very nice bit of engineering. |

Yes, looks much better than the alternative product. Dave H |

Very timely topic. I have been advised to purchase the Moss 190-422 clutch rod. (or Declan's upgraded rod). I can't feel any problem, but then I've never driven another T-series MG except mine. http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=80511 > What benefit will I probably get with the new rod? > How difficult is the connection inside the pedal box? > Do you feel that my rod needs replacing? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 Pic #1 (and no ... I don't know why there is a second jam nut on the rod) ![]() |

Well, someone's got to say it. Love the catch tank, level indicator and drain tap for the rear seal leak. I'd like to copy the fit, but I'll have to find out how to make it leak first.... Regards, David |

David, That's because you live in New Zealand where leaks go in the opposite direction. Paul, The fittings are marine fittings Lonnie, Here's a photo of the connection inside the pedal box. It is quite a tight fit and that is why I chose the special narrow rose joint. These are only 8mm thick as opposed to standard M8 rose joints which are 12mm. You obviously need the hole in the base of the pedal box which was introduced at some stage during production. Regards Declan ![]() |
