MG TD TF 1500 - Moss 5 speed conversion
Does the Moss 5 speed conversion require moving the engine forward? High Gear seems to have one that doesn't require moving the engine. PJ |

Neither of my installations required moving the engine. Have fitted two 5 speed conversions from Hi-Gear. One in my TF and just done so in my TC under restoration. The TF required I cut through the gearbox cross member and install a new one (no real hassle and no welding required just patience). The TC no cutting at all. Peter the owner is an extremely helpful chap if you need to chat. Either he or his wife will answer the phone. |

PJ, the Moss conversion is the High Gear conversion, just at an added cost. Order direct from High Gear and save money. Gene |

There is no big deal in moving the engine forward, it only needs to move about 10mm to clear the chassis crossmember behind the gearbox. The alternative kit requires a little more work to cut the crossmember and replace it with a large purpose designed bolt-in casting. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. There are pluses and minuses with both solutions. Dave H |

I bought it from Hi Gear direct several years ago. Cutting the cross member took about 5 minutes with my sawsall. Moving the engine - why? It did take a few thousand miles for the 1st gear synchro to work smoothly but it ran great! |

I highly recommend the modified 1st gear. Jim |
