MG TD TF 1500 - Moss seat cover - is this right?

I bought the seat cover kit from Moss. When I put the back seat cover in place I noticed that the two end pleats are sewn so that they stick out from the seat back like wings. They seem like extra pleats that were not cut off from the correctly sized seat back. I hope the photos explain what I am saying. Any ideas?

Hi Tim, when I had my TC it had the same 'pleats', that was also a Moss cover.

Tim have a look in CC's gallery. The end pleats look pretty much like the originals. How do they line up with the seat bottoms? Ideally they should form a continuous seam from the back through to the seat. This is something you don't often see in a restored car. Cheers

Tim,
Your Moss trim kit is as per the original design. I am led to believe it was that way to help hide the hood framing when the hood is folded down. Here is a photo of my TD seat back which I made myself and I must say getting that section of the trim right was the hardest part of trimming the whole car.
The sequence of doing the stitching is a nightmare. So install your new kit knowing it is as per original.

That is correct. I think Rob is right about the hood. That allows the hood bows to fold up and brush the pleats out of the way. If solid you would have to move the seat back all the way forward to fold the hood, or if narrower there would be a big gap. George

Thank you gentlemen. I feel better. Those "wings" weren't on the seat cover I removed from the seat that came with the car. The knowledge of the members and willingness to help sets this site apart from many car sites I frequent.

Nice job Rob. Cheers

I think it's supposed to act as a kind of gasket or screed to keep the boot cleaner. YMMV. :-)

Rob, beautiful job.

Peter my seams do line up. The result is based on my usual tactic, pure, damn luck. :-)

X3 they are correct.

Dave, what did you use to fasten the back. I'm having trouble justifying staples. I know they (or tacks ) were original but I think it would look bad. Has anyone painted the staples to make them blend in better?

Round headed tacks. Actually, I think they painted the heads of the tacks. But... I can't imagine anyone ever really seeing them. I think of all the cars I've looked at and never noticed the tacks or whatever along the sides of the seat back.

Warmly,
dave
