MG TD TF 1500 - Moss waterpump supplemental infos ???

I'd got a waterpump from a german dealer and it seems it is from moss.

Moss gives some information:

Now im dazzled or something stupid.

Why must the woodruff key first worked out to fit into the pulley (line 23-33 of the pdf) and after that the woodruff key should be removed (line 64). At this point I'd no chance to remove the woodruff key - it is too tight. Later the pulley is fitted (line92) and clearance should be check.

Did Moss forget to mention that the woodruff key must be inserted at the end? The old pump has such a key. Why is it necessary to remove the woodruff key in the beginning?

I got one of those 2 years ago and installed it. I did not notice about the instructions no mention of the Woodruff key. Of course you will need to install the key. I did follow the instructions for the remainder. These pumps take some time to prepare for installation, but have given me no problem since installation. No place on it for a grease fitting, though it did have a 6-vane impeller.

Gents,

Also installed a Moss pump two years ago. Never considered not using the key. The pump required a two minute dry run, I use a drill press at fairly low RPM. The impeller required the clearance to be set to .019 by tightening the nylock nut on the shaft. I forgot to count impeller blades but never had a cooling problem. JMTC for what it's worth.

How did you handle the engine control link?

I'd struggled so hard because it was so tight.

The additional complicate was the circumstance that the engine has only one stud. The lower fixing is a screw (no blind hole for a stud) and the angle for the engine control link had to be assembled with this screw before fastening the pulley.

In reading the instructions I think that Moss made some unwise changes to the internals of the pump. The original shaft had a shoulder on it. When this was hard against the washer that was against the inner bearing the impeller was pressed on to the proper clearance to the body. The shoulder on the outer end of the shaft was suppose to set below the surface of the hole in the pulley. This included the dished washer that sat between the pulley and the outer bearing. When the nut was tightened the shoulder washer the spread the load of the nut on the pulley you ended up with a more rigid assembly(nut, washer, pulley, washer, bearing, bearing spacer, bearing, shoulder on shaft). If the shaft doesn't have a shoulder you can't tighten the nut properly, and if you tighten it too much it will jam the impeller to the body.
