MG TD TF 1500 - msxsy---------What's is it?

Is the thread posted earlier today an attempt to collect personal info? I opened the thread but no way the link. Are my personal details safe?

I would change your passwords ASAP.
On your computer, your email provider, and this site.
There is s list of the 10000 most commonly used passwords. Find it and do not use one of them.
I will post URL's to both the list and a safe place to chech the strength of your new passwords.

Here is one source of the 10K most common passwords.

Do not use anything on this list.

Here is a safe place to check your new password for strength.

If you have only seen this breach on this site, you are probably safe. If some other sites have been attacked, or your friends have received similar messages your email account may have been hacked.

I prefer to use an email client and keep all my information on my home computer.

I have two routers, providing back to back hardware firewalls and a pair of Software Firewalls.

I have my own Cloud behind these firewalls.

I used to work for a military provider and I am horrified at the lack of security on today's internet.

If the Pentagon and the Whitehouse can't stop it, what chance do we have?
MG LaVerne

I've was knocked off (“banned from”) the forum and got a message saying my access code has been compromised. I saw the message from Jan questioning something about an "msxsy" thread and I received an alert that may or may not be related - something about "ErrorCode: (/image/xyz/isvid/http://marketing.scansoft ..."

I’ve re-registered with a new user name “Jud1” and new password. I hope I’m back in good standing. Jud

Look Guys this is serious.

I, and am sure others, opened up the thread but not the link. Are we now vulnerable to identity theft?

Responses are required urgently.

I never saw the thread and certainly didn't open it (unless the cat did it overnight) and I got bumped anyway. Jud

I believe that as long as you did not click on the link you are OK.

You should have had a good antivirus program active on your computer.
Many, such programs, would not have allowed you to activate the link.

So far, just reading a post, on a board like this, is usually safe.

No, there is no danger whatsoever. Viewing spam on your screen is no different than viewing any other content. If you visit the web site in the link however, you are asking for problems.

LaVerne, the advantage we have is that we are not targets to the kind of people who attack government institutions. The likelihood of someone actively "hacking" your personal computer are incredibly remote. When your computer contracts a virus, it is almost always your own fault.

Only our web master would know what's really going on. Maybe he could make a comment to ease everyone's mind?

Jud

When I saw the thread title and link in the thread, I used the "report abuse" link at the bottom of the page to send an email concerning the possible hacking of someones PC.

Mike Plumstead replied advising he had blocked the site.

Sorry Jud for any problem my reporting has caused. I believe it is better to report possible hacks than leaving us all vulnerable.

Stuart, I totally support your actions to protect us and this wonderful site. Don't hesitate to do the same thing in the future. I'm not even certain that my having to re-register was caused by the evil posting (correlation ain't always causation). Anyway, all seems well now. Jud
J. K. Chapin

I too almost used the "Report Abuse" link but aborted because it automatically opened my email client and I assumed it would add a link to this thread in my email thereby perpetuating the thing! That didn't seem safe to me so I aborted.
Mike, is that safe or not?

The report abuse link is perfectly safe. The only danger to anyone or anything is clicking the spammer's link.

This site uses authentication codes to identify users. Jud's code was compromised, allowing a spammer to post as him. It was almost certainly an automated process, no humans involved once the web crawlers were set in motion. If Mike has taken action by blocking the IP and/or domain of the attacker, then that's the end of it. There is no guarantee it won't happen again, but again there is no danger so long as you don't click anything you shouldn't be clicking, like spam links.
