MG TD TF 1500 - Muffler question

When I first installed the stainless steel exhaust system form Moss on my 51 TD I had a nice medium loud exhaust sound. Now after 1,000 miles it sounds like a straight pipe with no muffler. I did add a muffler heat wrap about 200 miles ago. I'm wondering if the trapped heat in the muffler might have deteriorated the packing inside. I really don't know how the muffler is constructed so packing might be the wrong term. Has anyone else had the same sound deterioration with this muffler? Is there a better replacement muffler that can be installed with the existing pipes?

Mine is rather noisy as well. I assume there is some fibrous material in the annulus around the perforated tube passing down the centre and that it becomes compressed or clogged with soot and therefore less effective. Mine is a stainless system (not Moss, but Bell I think, though they may be identical).

Brown and Gammons sell just the muffler. I'm waiting on a shipping quote before ordering. Others on the MG Experience site have reported deteriorating sound with the Tourist Trophy system.

I've never seen one deteriorate that quickly. Seems like it would have to get pretty hot to break down that fast. Have you tested the gasket for leaks?

I have a Falcon system on mine like LaVerne has on his. LaVerne has put a lot of miles on his car and I understand his system lasted 10 years before burning out the packing in the muffler, maybe less, so if that's the case my system should last another 25 years! Seriously, exhaust systems are a trial and error test to see if you even like the sound, let alone how long it'll last. Didn't Abingdon have a problem with this issue on the MGB-1800 and put a resonator in the system behind the muffler to solve it. PJ

My old muffler was starting to rust out so I bought a stainless setup from Moss. After 100 mi the new muffler started to make a sound like it was choking to death so I complained to Moss who sent me a new one. Before I had time to install the new one, the one on the car cleared its throat and now sounds somewhat like a glasspack muffler which is not altogether unpleasing. I still have the replacement in a box with other spares.

Steve, the muffler and pipes only have 1,00 miles on them and it sounds like a straight pipe. Moss only guarantees the system for 2 years now.

PJ, my 72 MGB had a resonator. I took it off and liked the sound better. Didn't have the car long enough to see if the muffler held up.

Jim, I'd be happy with a glasspack sound but the Moss unit with only 1,000 miles on it sounds like a straight pipe?

I'm must have the record. Fitted a Moss mild steel complete system 42 years ago and only now has the noise level increased, no leakage at all but I suspect the baffles in the silencer have gone south. Can't decide if I should live with it or pop for a new silencer.

Moss, through the extra efforts of their employee Leif Jacobsen, have agreed to replace the muffler. My faith in Moss is restored.
