MG TD TF 1500 - My New 5 Speed

Got an email from customs this morning that my new 5 speed is out for delivery and should be here tomorrow. After 5 months since first ordered, it'll be like a big belated Christmas present! Got to get this car out of the garage, it's starting to take root! PJ
PJ Jennings

Is it there yet, are you excited yet?

The fun is about to start.

Well, it's a 4 package shipment and I received only 3 packages, the 4th is the gearbox and it didn't arrive yet! How do you forget to include a 65-pound package? It was sent to Indiana instead of Tulsa, Ok! Tracking says it's in transit but won't say where. Again I have to call customer service! I'm sick and tired of dealing with FedEx! PJ
PJ Jennings

Sorry, here's what I received yesterday.PJ

PJ Jennings

Hang in there fella. Pity about the delivery (lack of) service, we have the same unreasonable delays here in Ozz.

On your first drive with the T9 fitted you will "discover" a whole new car! The change in the driving experience will amaze you. Better than sliced bread! I allowed myself 10 days for the conversion and took 15, the "handy work" of POs causing a few delays!

Sorry photos have rotated, damn software does it's own thing!

PJ Can't see your speedo cable in your picture?
JK Mazgaj

The speedo cable is coming in a later shipment, as HG didn't have them at the time the rest was shipped out. They have them now. This pic is very helpful. Thank you! PJ

PJ Jennings

Kev, does the transmission lock in the rear mount? PJ
PJ Jennings

G'day PJ,

Short answer, yes.

The gearbox mounting rubber (black in picture), sits on the rear platform. In my kit this had been fitted only required torqueing up.

When the gearbox extension meets with the mounting jack it cannot move fwd or aft. It's possible a little sideways alignment may be required for the following step.

Secure the gearbox mounting to the gearbox mounting point with the single 12mm set screw and spring washer, (use Loctite here). Torque to 37 ft lb (50Nm).

A brilliant kit but I personally found the instructions lacking some clarity (continuity and sequencing).

PJ,I found this tip somewhere online and it made the critical bellhousing to block alignment soooo easy!

I bought a pair of the longest M8 bolts available, cut the heads off and set them into the block finger tight.

The mess on the kick panel is the remains of the multi kilos of adhesive the upholsterers used to affix the carpet!!!

Thanks, Kev very helpful idea! I Like the diagram also, thanks for including that! I would say that the Internet is such a valued tool, (at times) when folks like us can share experiences and be of help to one another, and living thousands of miles apart! I knew nothing about most British cars 10 years ago but with folks from all corners of the world like you giving their experiences, makes things so much easier! Almost like we're neighbors! LOL PJ

Kev, that technique was first shown by the late Dave DuBois. See the thread TD Gearbox installation

Hello Bud,

that drawing came with the destructions, but as I noted, they are "fizzy"!

So, from my background of authoring and rewriting manuals to a military style, using the supplied instructions, I sat in the car (interior stripped out), and imagined my way through the conversion process. Noting torque specs at the stage they were required, along with tips provided by some very experienced guys in my club, Geelong MG Club.

No intention of stealing Dave Dubois's thunder.

Tranny came in today! Here are a couple of pics. PJ

Another pic. Don't know what the pound numbers mean?

PJ Jennings

Hi PJ,
If we are looking at the same thing, it is a continental number 7.
7/23 will be the speedo drive ratio, worm to wheel.
The other is the first gear ratio, lower than the XPAG box, I think.
Make sure the filler plug can be unscrewed while out of the car.It is a pig when in place.

I added a filler plug to the top plate-much easier to get at. You could calibrate a dip stick so you will never have to touch the side mounted, difficult to access, (1/2"-14 NPSF Dryseal)filler plug again. The High gear boxes come with a drain plug which is a great asset.

Declan, I like your picture of the transmission tunnel cut out and fitment. Shows the old saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" is true! Putting the gearbox and all its fittings together is no problem, I'm slightly confused about the cutout in the rear of the tranny cover though, where it states bending the flange down vertically. Does anyone have a pic of that mod? PJ
PJ Jennings

Paul,
I don't have a photo but it is nothing special. The instructions say to cut two slots in the side of the cover and bend the piece out 10mm, straighten it (90° bend at the base of the cut out) and cover the gap with "Gaffa" tape. It is just to allow access to the horrible filler plug which is very difficult to access once the box is fitted. I can think of a more elegant solution than using "Gaffa tape". That is why I mentioned installing a filler plug on the top of the box as you have a drain plug which normally is not fitted and then you never need to go near the side mounted filler plug.

Declan, sorry for what may seem a silly question but I'm looking at the mod you did to add a filler plug to the top of the transmission. I haven't popped the top off the transmission on the car I'm helping with but is the sheet metal thick enough to thread? If not, would a rubber hole plug work as well?

Thanks,
John
JWC Currier

John,
The cover is approx. 2mm thich and just about enough to take a thread. A weld on boss would be better. Don't forget to drill a small hole in the plug as a vent. You could add a dip stick but be careful where you place it. I dont see why a rubber bung/plug would not work but again-vent it.

Original transmission Oil filler plug. Does anyone know the thread size? PJ

I'm also checking the dipstick's original position and if it's compatible with the T9 box, I want to add it to the cover also. If I'm making any mod to the trans, it must match the holes in the trans cover as original. So far it looks like it'll work.

PJ Jennings

Thank you!

Found out my torque wrench is 5 lbs off, so instead of 60 lbs, the bolt's final torquing is 65 lbs instead. PJ

PJ Jennings

Crossbar cut out and test fit of new mount. PJ

PJ Jennings

Had a friend who is an aircraft mechanic come over and check the bell housing bolts with one of his wrenches and he said they're set at 62 lbs and he would leave them alone. My torque wrench needs recalibrating, which I already know. 65 lb indicated in the pic is wrong! PJ
PJ Jennings

Found out that my disc centering tool has one adapter that matches the T9 pilot bearing to a "T"! Perfect! Don't know how I could be so lucky. Will install it when I get my order of safety wire for the flywheel bolts delivered. PJ

PJ Jennings

5 speed box filler/dip stick. Cover off and considering the location for installing the filler plug. Should have done this BEFORE installing the box but there. Anyway using a screwdriver as a guide any clear access to establish and make up a dip stick seems very close to the perimeter of the cover. Any suggestions. Obviously a filler plug on it's own -no problem however if centralized will come in contact with the gears.
JK Mazgaj

5 Speed installed. PJ

PJ Jennings

I haven't done it yet but I am going to measure the fill port and dipstick position on the original tranny and see if they coincide with no interference on the T9 gears. Looks like the original dipstick position is away from any moving parts, this can be done after the floorboards are installed but not the trans cover. Other things to do first. PJ
