MG TD TF 1500 - Need a repair solution for Hood Attachment

I have a question for you:
GK Guenter

I have a question for you:
I found the attachment for the Hood out of function. The screws are pulled out from the wood that make the point week. My first attempt was to install a RAMPA insert into the wood but even that works just for a couple of opening and closing actions of three roof
How can I fix it? Any suggestions?
Cheers, Guenter

I would use a wood plug. Drill out the wood large enough to put in a hardwood plug--would use a fostner bit--glue the plug in and then redrill for the hood mounting screw. If a drill won't work cause of space or too close to the edge, you can use a trim router or dremel to hollow out a space for a wooden filler piece.

I think I just used flat head bolts and T nuts on the bottom side of the wood under the dash.

Are we talking "hood": the soft top or the engine covering? British or American definition?

Looks like the frame for the hood/top in the pic. PJ

I second J Cosin comment. Simply drill it out the diameter of a wood dowel, glue and plug.

Make sure you take/bend the panel off first because drilling through that fabric could bind on the drill and create a disaster.

As a quick alternative you can try using some smaller dowells and using a epoxy wood filler as a glue. You can even do this by filling the void with wood and glue and then lightly screwing in your wood screw. Then after a day go back and tighten the wood screw, if you can even move it.

Drill out and plug is the best solution. I have been using Urethane glue/ Moisten the plug slightly and the drilled area on the body. Put urethane glue on the plug, insert and clamp with wax paper under the clamp surface.

Urethane glue expands as it cures, so the next day you may have to trim the surface flat. You will end up with a rot-proof, waterproof repair.

Drill and plug usually works.

IMPORTANT DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRILL THRU LEATHER/VINYL PANEL!!!!

Experience is a good teacher.

Do NOT use a dowel!!! Buy a plug cutter and fill the hole with a plug.

OK, thank you for all the proposals.
I will drill and install a plug as recommended.
What size of Plug should I use? I have forstner bits starting with 15mm /18mm/20mm up to 35mm.
Is Gorilla Glue recommendet?
Thank you all

If you use a dowel you will then be putting the new screw into end grain - never the ideal. If you use a plug cutter you can cut the plug into tangential or radial grain and replicate the original.
I am not familiar with Gorilla glue but steer clear of PVA glues, I would use an aliphatic resin like Titebond or even an epoxy.
The plug only needs to be the next size larger than the damaged area.
Hope this helps,

OK, I made a Plug using my Lathe. Inside the Plug I installed a RAMPA Insert in order to have together with machine bolt a very strong anchor point.

My last question is the Glue to be used. I'm living on the other side of the Pont and all the proposed manufacturers brand names are not available in good old Germany.
Can I use an Epoxy Material like J-B Weld ?
GK Guenter

GK,
Uhu Endfest 300 has similar properties and is more than adaquate. You can buy JB Weld on eBay in Germany. It is also very good.

The plug should definitely be cut so that the screw or RAMPA is going in cross grain, not end grain. Standard wood working glue such as Elmer's or Titebond will work well. Although they are not water proof they are, once set, very water resistant and in that location should be pretty free from water anyway.

Thank you for all the recommendations. I cut the plug out of a old plank mahogany wood and insert it using UHU Endfest 300 as Declan recommend. It Works fine so far. I hope it will hold forever. But I’m not sure about that because the epoxy seems to me something brittle, OK we will see.
