MG TD TF 1500 - Need new threads

Hi all

So the rear splash apron on the TD is held on by 4 bolts, 2 on top and 2 at the rear plus the 2 bolts that hold on the bumper. The aft bolt on the right threads into the frame just below the bumper bolt and there are no threads, it was just held in by rust and dirt. What is a good way to redo the threading as there is no access to the inside of the frame. The hole is just big enough to slip the bolt in. Also what is the correct bolt specs. The left bolt is 5/16W whereas the right is 11/16 SAE(?).

Sorry about the sideways pic.

Thanks

Stuart

helicoil ?

I'v heard of them but have no idea how to use them. I found some in the correct thread here:

Do you have to drill out the original hole and tap for the coil?

I retapped mine to I think M14. I was able to buy stainless bolts on line. No one will ever know the difference.

The helicoil kit will tell you the drill size necessary. It also provides the oversized tap for the coil and the tool for installation. Just need to take care in drilling and tapping the hole as straight as possible. Use the correct BSF thread coils. The next owner will thank you.

Stuart, there are a number of U-tube videos on the installation of Helicoils. Well worth watching. Bud

Agree with Bill. I had to cut off a number of fastened nuts on my TD frame because the po retapped them to american thread.

Thanks guys. I ordered a 3/8-20 BSF kit. Should be there when I get home.

The car was ‘restored’ by someone long before my dad bought it. From a distance the car looks great but when you dig into it to fix something you discover something not quite right. Example-when I rebuilt the brakes I found that 3 of the wheels had one kind of stud and the 4th had a different one. And the spare had bolts tack welded on the carrier with a third thread. Got the wheel right while fixing the brakes a few years ago and just got the spare done last week.

When I find the wrong hardware / parts while doing a job I try to replace it with the correct stuff. Does it make the car go better? Probably not but it makes me feel like I’m doing a good job as the conservator of my late fathers pride and joy.
