MG TD TF 1500 - New cam chain
Can new cam chain be installed without removing sump? I.e. are there chains that can be opened? |

Bet the chain AND sprockets need changing. If you put a new chain on and sprockets are worn, it will jump on you. |

You have to drop the pan. If the chain is bad then in practicality so are the gears. Never run new against old unless you enjoy frequent renewals. Your not saving money if you have to take it apart again buying twice the parts and and dealing with or paying for twice the labor. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

The thing is that when renovating the engine I thought I used utmost care to ensure the chain should come in the right position, well aware of the consequences, but it didn't. But I think I have now found a supplier of correct type of chain locks - probably not the correct name, but I am sure you understand what I mean. The engine is not installed yet, so I intend to cut the chain, move it and fit a new lock. But if the seal will be distorted when removing the cover, I will have to remove the oil pan anyhow. All most annoying. |

If you have a modern, lip, seal you will find that you can not remove the timing cover without lowering the sump. I learned that a few months ago when I was replacing the seal. Bud |

Bud Have realized the same thing this morning - sigh. Will try to make a tool for forming a recess for a lip seal. I donīt fancy removing the pan again. Have asked in another thread for pictures or a drawing of a tool for that operation. |
