MG TD TF 1500 - New Merson TD List on Ttalk (Nov. 2017)

See http://www.ttalk.info/car_lists.htm for the latest list of TDs from George Merson. As of Nov. 23, 2017. An updated TF list will be up shortly.

Please remember that it's George's list, I'm just presenting it. Contact George directly for any questions, changes, etc. Bud
Bud Krueger

Are both lists kept current? Have contacted George several times with corrections and the list is never updated.

I agree there are errors to the car I listed three years ago and sent those corrections and info on four other cars last year that still aren’t listed

Two days ago I had sent an email to George asking him adding my car to the file. I got a quick response yesterday.

George has had some serious medical issues in the past year. He's now in line for a hip replacement. He's called it quits of TD ownership and sold his car to a UK dealer. It was just put on the market for £33,000. Be sure to refresh your browser when you check the lists.

Rick is busy finding TF info from various sources, e.g., eBay.

They're both doing this voluntarily, using a data base that is not happy about being converted to a web page. George's is in WordPerfect and Rick's is in Excel.

Bud - do you have a link to the UK listing of George's car? Thanks.

Tom, try gmerson8 (at) hotmail.com. I'm sure that George would be happy to tell you the story. Bud

I have covered this issue before. I am a great WordPefect fan ... have been since 1985; but WordPerfect like MS Word, was never designed to support a dataBase.

But it IS possible to extract text and form it into a sortable dataBnase in Quattro Pro or Excel (but ACCESS woild be the more desirable choice) using a procedure know as parsing.

So I took the first few lines of data from mersons WP dataBase and was able to parse it manually into sortable fields. So I have saved the file as an Excel file, but don't know how to share it via this forum - any ideas?

Here is an extract of my first try. Remember in Excel each one of these data, is individual data in separate cells and not in text form, as George's file presently is.

256 505 RHD NJ. USA
257 523 RHD G. Pinfold, Australia
258 522 LHD Somerset, UK
259 510 RHD Frank Wellman, Australia
260 TF35153 RHD Edward Floate, WA. USA
267 TF35206 RHD Robert Browne, Australia
268 558 RHD M. Magilton, Australia
270 525 RHD ***
279 565 RHD Trevor McGill, Australia
282 541 RHD Graeme Jones, Australia
283 539 RHD Prewitt, NM. USA

Problem with the first two columns, is that Excel treats them as numbers, and not the labels that they are supposed to be, and I haven't yet figured how to get a column to recognize all data in it, as labels.

Any wise Excel folks out there?

Sorry folks. The Excel format I had on the screen didn't reproduce on the Forum ... anyway, I think you can get the idea.

Gord, it's George's file. I've been hosting it for almost 13 years now. George has no interest in switching to a language other than WordPerfect. I've finally developed a 5 step process to take the wpd file and turn it into a txt file that can be easily read through htm. George is our age+. When/if he decides to call it quits somebody else can take it over.

The Jeff Payne TF file is kept as an Excel file. It takes more steps for me to turn it into an htm file than George's WordPerfect file.

Gord -

I've only done a few Access databases, but I depended on Excel to guide and monitor business for years, so I'm pretty comfortable with it. Forgive me if my explanation is to simplistic or if it doesn't answer your question.

Bud did the hard part ... he converted the WordPerfect data into a delimited text file.

> Download the file TDList1117.txt from Bud's site.
> Open Excel
> Navigate to the folder with the .txt file.
> Choose filetype "Text Files (*.prn; *.txt; *.csv)"
> Choose and open TDList1117.txt
> File - Save As
> Choose filetype Excel -- .xlsx or .xls
> Accept the default choices "Next" "Next" "Finish"

You can convert all data in the spreadsheet to text by highlighting the entire sheet and choosing "text" from the list of number categories under Format Cells. However, I see no need to do so.

Freeze the rows and columns at cell B6 to freeze the column headings and the Car # rows.

To sort / Filter / etc, highlight rows 6 through the end, then choose Data / Sort.

Depending on the version of Excel, the box for "filetype" may not be labeled. It is located to the right of the filename, or below the filename.

I believe that data for Last Name, First Name, City, State, Country would have to be created manually.

The problem with the headings is in Row 4. A bunch of spaces were inserted before "on engine" to make it line up with "Engine #" To correct the problem:

> Unfreeze panes
> Change the text in Cell B3 to "Engine # on engine"
> Format Cell B3 to Wrap Text
> Delete Row 4
> Delete Rows 1&2
> Adjust row height of (the new) Row 1 so that "Engine # on engine" can be seen.
> Freeze Panes at Cell B3
> Save

Optionally delete (the new) Row 2. Then Freeze Panes at Cell B2.

You can now sort by selecting the entire sheet. Data/Sort, "My data has headers"

I have long admired the work of George Merson.
This is the most complete list I have ever found.
I have also used EXCEL from day one from Microsoft.
Have converted and tabled the sheet.
I would love to help George Merson and maintain the list.
Or at least make the excel form available for users to download.
May I publish the list on my site ( once I complete it )?
With credit to George Merson of course.

I would also like any update info

M Grogan

Mike, the list is George's, not mine. You are free to do whatever you want. There's a link to George's email on the site, http://www.ttalk.info/MersonList.htm Bud
Bud Krueger

I have sent George a email. Waiting for a response.

In the mean time, if anyone would send me updates or new entries I will compile them here until George and can contact.
thx

M Grogan

If you send me any info.... PLEASE
enter *GEORGE LIST* in subject line.
This will let any email I get go into a special folder so I do not miss it with the hundreds of emails I get each day.

Even as I am retired, I still pick up contracts sometimes.

All this only if everyone is OK with me taking on this task.
If anyone that is unhappy should say so and I will back out.

I plan to make public soon a new updated list with your help.

thx
M Grogan

Mike, what is it about the present Merson List that you don't like and intend to change? Bud
Bud Krueger

location and owner in same cell.
If car should be sold. Makes it harder to update and then you do not have any history on car.
Also I have made it searchable a lot easier.

Just a few items like that.

Its not that its wrong, I just enjoy taking on a task to my liking.

I am not taking away anything from George. Just helping out in my own way.
I am still waiting for George to contact me when he can. Just hope he is not upset for me changing the list.

I will send you a copy when completed to see if you agree.

thx

M Grogan

Mike, you might want to keep in mind the fact that the list is copyrighted by George. If it's your intention to take over the maintenance of the list I think you should have George give it over to you. I'll just remove it from Ttalk.info. Bud
Bud Krueger

Have not published it.
Am waiting for George to contact from my email.
And George's name will still be on the title.

No intention to publish as my own work.
If no one wants it, I am doing for myself.

there is a lot of good info in this list. I just want to help out.

I have TD 1250 at my place now engine 1578

Mike, I have an idea. Please hold off on jumping into the loop with George. George's updates are usually about 6 months apart. That gives me time to work out another routine for converting George's WordPerfect file into something more readily searchable. Bud
