MG TD TF 1500 - No Chassis Numbers
Hi All When changing the brake shoes I decided to scrape the crud and underseal off the dumb iron to expose the chassis number. Guess what no number. Images attached of body plate and dumb iron. Did they forget or is it a new chassis? Any ideas please. ![]() |

I can only see the body plate there. It could be a new dumb iron owing to accident damage, but inspection of the welds would give a clue. It shouldn't be too difficult to stamp it as required. The number bears checking against the various records. Dave H |

Perhaps a silly question but are you looking at the left side dumb iron? Tim TD26711 |

Top right corner of the picture is left hand gaiter. should give you some idea where to look. Peter ![]() |

Hi Tim Yes it’s the left hand side dumb iron. I am trying and failing to upload the image of the dumb iron I will keep at it Regards |

The stamping on mine is to the left of the bottom LH nut. Dave H |

At times over the years the dumb irons get bent in an accident, replacements were available, possibly yours was bent and a new one welded on and the number might not have been thought of to transfer. Just a possibility. PJ |

Just to clarify the image. Top is the gaiter! Which should be on the right hand of the image Regards |

So I guess it’s ok to stamp the chassis number as shown on the body plate onto the dumb iron?? Opinions please Thanks for the replies Regards |

If your engine number matches the chassis plate it is a pretty good guess that the plate has your correct chassis number. It would lend credence if your car matched the HDC16 criteria. And I assume the UK registration paperwork list the chassis number on your chassis plate. If so I'd feel fully justified in stamping the numbers in the dumb iron. Tim TD26711 |

FWIW, I couldn't find a number on my frame either. Left, right, inside surface or outside surface, No signs of welding. '53 TD 29350, very late in production. |

Hi Dave Can I please get a favour?? Can you please measure the height of your numbers,so i can compare them to my existing set I may have to get a new set if mine are a mile out Regards John |

Here's a link to the location of the Car Number on the dumb iron of my TD10855. http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/CarNumber.htm Bud |

They could very well still be there but just painted out. I'd sanded my dumb irons then primed & painted them only to discover I'd hidden the number. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

The #s are rather large and hand stamped.. Not very deep or straight and not evenly spaced. They are about one half inch tall. I have a large collection of old stamps and remember thinking how large the #s where. Forrest TD/C 22679 |

Hi all I have looked at both sides, underneath, on top, etc , nothing that I can see. I can’t see any welding on the chassis, but it may covered in underseal. If a chassis has had a new front dumb iron, where would I look for the weld line Thanks again |
J A Davies |
You need to look along the back edge of the side, top and bottom, then compare the welds with the other side. Not at home at the moment, so can't measure up my chassis stamp until I get back at the weekend. Done by hand with fairly large stamps. Dave H |

Wire brush all of any paint and primer off the iron. The are not stamped that deep.
