MG TD TF 1500 - no oil pressure after changing oil
Hello all, I searched the BBS about the above problem, but my searches do not return any threads. I know it has been covered many, many times in the past. My car is a 52 MG TD with the late oil pump and filter. I changesd the engine oil today without the filter[didn't touch it] Afterwards no oil pressure. I primed the oil pump with engine oil several times. It was filled every time I unscewed the plug. What is the next step? Thanks a lot, Frank |

How long did you run the engine and then decide to turn it off ?? |

Frank, This won't be much help but the one time I had that experience it was a small leak in the flex line between the engine and firewall. The leak prevented the gauge from registering. Also, it might be helpful to know your engine number as there was a change to a self priming pump but I have forgotten at what serial number was when the new pump came out. Good luck, Jim Haskins 1953 TD |

Hey, Fellow Dutchman you could try to un-screw the flex oil line at the spot where the flex line meet the copper line and see while starting / cranking if any oil is coming out. If you like to communicate in Dutch please let me know Hengeveld.gerard @gmail .com Cheers, Gerard |

Hello, Here is another fellow Dutchman.... If you remove the rocker cover and start her up shortly, you can look if any oil is coming out of the rockers and you'll know if it is only the gauge or not. Maybe you can see it through the fillercaphole. Erik |

Frank, remove the plug that you filled the pump through, push down the pressure relief valve ball with a small screwdriver. This will allow oil to the suction side of the pump. spin the motor over on the starter and oil should come out. Replace the plug and start up, as you did nothing but change the oil, all should now be OK. It always seems to take forever for oil pressure to rise. Ray TF 2884 |

You also may need to rotate the engine backwards with the plug removed to suck the oil in. I would remove the plugs to spin over to see if you get pressure rather than actually start. There is a lot in the archives about priming oil pumps also. George |

Hello all, problem solved. What did the trick? I pushed the car backwards in 2nd gear. First a short distance without result. Later about 10 meters, then spin the starter [no sparkplugs, ignition off] Result: a big mess of oil, because no plug in the oil pump. Put the plug back in place, Start again: Hurray!! Oil pressure back. In retrospect I think, that I caused the problem by draining the oil and going to lunch. The suction pipe got a chance to drain itself. Thanks a lot for all suggestions. I am a member of this board for 15 years. It never fails to give the right suggestions and sollutions. And it is very nice to see that the familiar people are still contributing. Chapeau! Frank |
