MG TD TF 1500 - Not T Type but near
Attached is a pic of a Y engine with only 20,000 miles from new. I have been messing with T's for over 40 years and have never seen adjusters that are unmarked as they came from the factory. The only reason it was apart is because an exhaust valve chunked but with no damage. The owner who died recently was a member of our local Octagon car club. His wife has become a member and we will maintain it and her TD for her. Ray TF 2884 ![]() |

Looks like that Tab Washer is not set well. Perhaps assembly is not yet complete. |

open rocker holes as well. |

My rocker holes are open, TD, 57K miles. ..... |

I imagine that the rocker shaft has been off for inspection purposes, and then replaced with new tabs. These have not yet been turned up because the guy was going to run the engine a while then retorque them and turn up the tabs. The vent holes are meant to be open. Dave H |

The photo was taken before we ran the engine and then we staked the tabs.As to the rocker holes,it is not my car so I did not mess. On my own TF I blocked the holes many years ago,I was told by an older car mechanic that it a factory instruction to drive a ball into the hole and stake after the engine was run in.There is still lots of oil splashing about the head and I have not had any excessive cam or follower wear.I am not sure but I believe the TA engine had no holes?. Interesting. Its not something that is in the WSM (that I can find anyway). Dave H |

Very interesting article - many thanks for that. Opinions seem to differ on whether it's a good idea or not, as there are pros and cons. Dave H |

I would think carefully about blocking those holes. You WANT oil to drizzle out of the top of the rocker so it will eventually get to the top of the valve where it lubricates both the point of contact between the rocker and the valve, and the valve stem and spring. From the article: "There was a Morris Engines Service Sheet published in March 1938 that told dealers to blank these holes off by hammering 1/8 inch ball bearings into the holes.". Certainly by the 50's they would have changed their manufacture of this part and sealed the hole if there was any benefit to be gained. ... |

I can only go by my own experience. My engine has done getting on for 400,000 miles over half of this by me. Re-bored many times, sleeved back to standard now on a 0.010" rebore, it gets seriously revved ( I have a spare engine + spare crank). The only concession is that the crank is balanced along with rods and pistons. If you look at the contemporary A & B series engines they do not have a hole in the top of the rocker and they don't wear out an more than XPAG's. Although mine no longer has the holes, I once ran it with the rocker cover off,--never again--.so there is plenty of oil up there The article in ttypes mentioned Don Jackson, he was a member of our local Octagon group and it may well have been him that told me.
