MG TD TF 1500 - O ring instead of Cork?
I put the new Moss O rings on the carb choke shafts instead of cork. They seem to drag and not letting the shafts return all the way to close. Their as loose as I dare. Can't increase the spring pressures as it will be very hard to pull the chokes on. Should I redo them and use the cork instead? PJ PS, I even lubed the shafts to see if that helped, it didn't! |

What about adding some silicone lube? |

Paul, I have a hydraulics business with thousands of o-rings, and I tried them in the carbs. There are applications where cork and leather are superior to the lastest seal materials. This is one of those times where I'd select the cork. |

Paul - I fought changing the cork gaskets and glands to modern materials. I finally replaced them with Teflon and Viton December last year. No leaks since. And the jets move up and down easily. Don't know if it helped -- I polished the jets with Brasso so that the Teflon O-rings would perhaps slide easier. I bought the O-rings from a local supply house. O-rings sizes have a "dash" in front of the number, so they are called "dash numbers." These O-rings replaced the glands and jet sealing washers in the SU H-4 carbs on my TF-1500. > JET SEALING WASHER: "-210" Viton O-rings @ $0.75 each, walk-in retail price. One O-ring per carb. (Two required for two carbs) > GLANDS: "-010" Teflon O-rings @ $0.49 each, walk-in retail price. Two O-rings are required to replace each cork gland ... two Teflon at the top and two at the bottom. (Four required for one carb. Eight required for two carbs.) I bought from Sterling Seal and Supply 541 Johns Rd, Apopka, FL Branches in other US cities $15.00 minimum order Round off the sharp edges around the holes through the side of the jets so that they do not cut the Teflon O-rings when you install them. Here is info about installing O-rings by Tom Bryant. Some people disagree with some of his rebuild methods, but most accept that his info on O-rings. http://thosbryant.wordpress.com/2014/03/01/su-carburetor-rebuild-h-4/ Lonnie TF7211 |

Paul, I fought lousy cork seals of various types since the early 70s. They all leaked after a couple years, choke was hard to pull, etc. I switched to Tom Bryan's Teflon 0-rings in 2007 and have not had a leak since. The choke pulls incredibly easy. "Their as loose as I dare"? What is loose? The big nut has to be cinched up tightly. What color are the Moss O-rings? George |

I have the Moss O-rings (the color is black) and they work just fine with no leaks. Maybe polishing with Brasso is worth a try. Joe |

I fixed a TD with a bad carb leak at a GOF a few years ago. The leaking jet packings were rubber o rings, but I have no idea who the vendor was. I have never used the Teflon o rings, but I have heard good things. David |

Just installed Tom Bryant's kit of 8 Teflon orings and 2fat Viton (?) orings in my TF SU's and have no leaks and good choke activation/return. Thanks for the phone advice , Tom. I had tried to install the rebuild kit with cork seals (the Moss/SU rebuild kit) but had gas weeping problems. On dis-assembly, I found the new cork seals and brass washers in bad shape. All were soaked in oil for 24 hours as recommended. I doubt if I could do better on a second attempt with the cork stuff but I'm fairly confident I could do another successful rebuild with the Teflon/Viton oring kit. |

PJ - Contact Tome Bryant at: thosbryant@gmail.com and get a set of 8 teflon 'O' Rings (two each, top and bottom). They will fix your problem. Cheers - Dave |

I just substituted the cork with Viton O rings and they work perfectly. Dave H |

Just sent Tom Bryant an email. Thanks guys! PJ |

Ordered Toms O rings. Man I hate to pull those carbs again, especially with the side panels in place. PJ |

How do the "O" rings hold up to the current gasoline with ethanol? thanks, Bill TD24570 |
Bill Brown |
Don't know Bill, but I'm assuming their ok as being Teflon. I'm putting them in there when they come and hope they hold up! PJ |

Viton is fine. Dave H |
