MG TD TF 1500 - Oil change from hello
Well, in another thread I had indicated that there was no seal at the oil filter cartridge flange. After reading a few comments about fellas digging out their own petrified seals I though I'd better take a second look. See the picture for what I laboriously dug out of that tiny little, hard to see, hard to get to, mission-critical, slot. WHO DESIGNS STUFF LIKE THIS????? Anyway... thanks to those who weighed in and encouraged me to dig (literally) a little deeper. I had originally put a new seal on top of the one hiding at the bottom of the trench and I was in danger of failure and loss of an engine. If the spin-on conversion parts weren't $100.00 I'd consider it. .... ![]() |

Figure out how many factory filters you would buy for the same money, and it's really not much. I have customers who have me change their spin-off filter every 2,000 miles because they believe a new filter is cheap insurance! Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Just so I'm clear, the groove we are discussing is the one shown in the attached pic? Cheers Peter TD 5801 ![]() |

YES,,, that's it,,they are not hard to replace if they are replaced every year,, but if they are left in there too long, they are terrible to get out,,, BEST bet would be to go for the spin on/off type,,, in the long run, comparing the price of a stock filter to a modern spin on, ,, it does work out to be a good deal as Tom indicates. Just replaced one on a B engine. Same deal, rock hard, bear to get out. |

Thanks Steve. Can the spin on filter be used with the original canister or does it replace it altogether? Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Peter Have a look at Moss Motors >Oil System > Spin-on Oil Filter Adaptors. especially the Info sheet Stuart |

Peter, the adapter/spin-on filter replaces the canister and cartridge altogether. It allows easier, less messy filter changes and modern spin-ons filter better (have more filter area) than the cartridge. The adapter is not too big a deal to install(and, presumably to uninstall although I haven't done it) so you could use the spin-on for most driving and revert to the canister to wow the originality cops at a show.
