MG TD TF 1500 - Oil Filters
For those of us with the horizontal oil filters found on late TD and all TF engines, I have a question. There are two types of filter available: the enclosed, perforated cylinder and the felt cylinder. In my years of following this site, I have not seen any discussion of the pro's and con's of one over the other. I changed my oil today and installed the felt type in the Tecalamit canister on my TF. I just happened to have the felt filter in my spares box. It came with the car. Is felt as good as the more conventional filter I have used for 8 years? Tom '54 TF |

If you go into the archives you can find all sorts of discussions on this. Inconclusive if you ask me. I still have lots of felt ones left and will continue to use them. :-) |

And then are those of us who advocate to use of a modern spin-on oil filter. Bud |

I use the canister with paper innards as my filter element of choice. It is made by wix and is the same filter media in a spin on. There are modern cars that use this same element with a reusable can which is the reason this filter element is available at napa parts stores at any given time. I don't really see the need to change to a spin on and introduce another part in the lubrication system. As for the felt elements, my feeling and opinion, based solely on hunch, is that they are not as good at filtering as a paper element. But I've not looked into it. Alex |

Alex - what is the part number for the filter you use :-) Dave |

That's a NAPA 1300, or Wix 51300, an excellent filter. I used to use that before I did the spin-on adapter. Bud |
