MG TD TF 1500 - Oil pump; plug

There is a large plug on the top of the oil pump on my 1951 TD. I want to determine the proper finish for this plug. It almost looks like it is cadmium plated. I looked in the archives and T Talk and could not find an answer. I remember reading about this someplace many years ago but I don't remember where now.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Milton Babirak

Hi Milton, my TD is an early 51 and I am pretty sure the plug was painted red.

I have never seen anything but brass plugs. I think originally the entire pump and plugs were painted red. The early pump style banjo bolts were some type of steel and not brass. Could you post a picture of exactly which plug you are referring to? George

It's the plug in the middle of this photo.

I can't seem to upload a photo. I get a message that the photo was too large. But that can't be because I'm just taking it with my iPhone. I'll try again later when I get to my desktop computer.

There are apps for cropping, resizing (number of pixels x pixels) and compressing (number of bytes) for your phone. Very easy. Always crop first.

Much better for mailing to an email address or forum, Facebook, etc.

I find 800px wide (proportional for height) works well as long as you aren't planning to enlarge to 8x10 on paper.

I am trying to upload the photo again from my desktop. It does not help. I still cannot. I'll have to try later when I have more time to figure this out. Thanks for your advice on cropping. I'll look into this.

Milt, the most probable cause of your upload "too big" is the default file resolution and resultant file size on iPhone is 8Mb (3264x2448). This has been true from iPhone 4s through iPhone 6 (and applies to Android phone too, doesn;t matter the brand). This doesn't change when you copy it to a desktop, it still remains 8Mb in size, too big to upload. You have to downsize (ie. reduce resolution which reduces files size).
I'd say 90+ % of people don't change their default settings to a lower resolution (ie. much smaller file size per picture). 90% of people can;t tell the difference between an 8Mb full resolution photo printed out and one at 1Mb in size with 1/8 the resolution. Given 99% of printers only can do 300 dots/inch and video screens (including TVs) are less than that, higher resolutions only matter if you're printing poster size prints.
High resolutions (8Mb, 12 Mb, ...) are pure marketing sales jobs, 90+% of uses and people can't come close to seeing the difference.
First time I do with new phone, camera is reduce the default photo size. Just wasting file space on the phone/camera/desktop/backup/cloud.

Thanks Randy. Very helpful.
I went to settings and photos on my iPhone and couldn't find a way to reduce the resolution of a photograph or take a new photograph with the reduced resolution. If you know how to do that would be great if you could pass that on.

Otherwise I guess I'll have to ask George if he wouldn't mind giving me his email address so I can email him the photo.
Milton Babirak

The iPhone has a fixed resolution. You cant change it.
You can send the picture to your home computer and change it there.
If its Windows, at least to Win7 right click on the file.
Click on edit. (This will open paint)
Click on resize.
(Be sure the box "pixels" is checked)
Change the larger number to 900, or 800.
Save the file, using a different name or add R (reduced) to the existing name, before the extension)

I will open my Mac Book and figure out how to do it there.

On a Mac book or Mac
open "Preview"
Its in "Launchpad"
Navigate to the file on open it.
go to "Tools".
Click on "Adjust Size"
to the Right of "Size/Height use the pull down menu to check "Pixels"
change the larger number to 900 or 800.
Click on OK

NOTE this will save the existing file with the reduced resolution.
If you want to retain a high resolution file make a duplicate first.

Hi, That is the banjo bolt that attaches the oil pipe to the filter. Steel, so was originally painted red. Not sure if cad plated or what originally. What do others think about color/coating? George

George Butz

Jim. Thanks for your input. Good to know. I have a Mac desktop. Would it be possible to update the BBS so it would accept higher resolution images? It would be much easier to make one change on the BBS rather than everyone "detuning" their images each time. Just a thought.
I see George has already attached my image on his post.
Milton Babirak

I just noticed, and I should have recalled it, if you MAIL the photo to your self, on an iPhone 6, you will be prompted to chose a size. For a normally 1.6 Mb, choices are Small (31Kb), Medium (77Kb), Large (463 Kb) or actual size.

Medium should be fine.

Ahhhh! That's a bit easier but does that work when I upload to this BBS site? These size options appear when I email a photo but I don't remember this choice coming on screen when I upload.
Milton Babirak

No.
You would need to email to yourself on the iPhone then upload.

I understand now. Thanks.
