MG TD TF 1500 - oiler steering gear
The steering gear must be oiled. I only have a grease gun. I'd looked for an oil gun on amazon but most aren't recommended because they leak. Does the us market provide better ones? |

You should be able to undo the grease/oil nipple and squirt some oil through the hole. Dave H |

DITTO on what Dave said,, I searched the archives and found this http://www2.mg-cars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=8&subjectar=8&thread=2010082123161831206 I usually put a short length of neoprene tube over the nipple of the gear lube bottle, and insert it into the hole.. Hope this helps Steve |

Thanks Steve simple solution. I didn't know that dismantling the nipple will end without leaking. |

I use an old style grease gun I purchased from Moss, Part No. 386-710 for oiling my TF steering rack. A modern grease gun will not work. I tried to convert a modern gun without success. Make sure you flush out any old grease and check out the nipple. Mine was blocked and I had to play with it to get it to work 1955 TF 1500 9194 |

Remove the damper plug from the top of the steering rack and simply pour the oil in. However, don't lose the shims. |

X2 for Lew's suggestion. I settled for that method years ago. It is slow, but considering that very little oil ever needs to be added (unless one of the bellows develops a leak), it is not a big deal. Cheers - Dave |

So much helpful answers - thank you all. I guess I will start with removing the nipple. |
Bela |
Dave D: It is a lot faster if you also remove the damper pad, not just the cap. |

Just finished rebuilding the rack. I gently clamped it in a vice, removed the grease nipple and large fitting below. I then used a 60 cc catheter tip medical syringe (should be available at any medical supple house). I found that by squeezing the rubber bellows of the seals I could force the air out, then slowly injected oil as I released pressure on the seals which sucked the oil right in. I had to work the rack back and forth several times to work all the air out. |

Take a grease gun and fill it with oil! Phone me Klaus |

I succeeded following the method of J. Cosin - thank you all. |
