MG TD TF 1500 - Oilpump

I've pulled the XPAG engine from my TD mkII to fix the oil leaks from both front and rear cambearings. The crank bearings are to be replaced as well plus what else might be found when taken apart.
The engine has the old oilpump with the canister filter, which has been converted to spin on.
I've taken the top off of the pump by removing the 8 long bolts, but still the pump doesn't move at all. I've tried to tap it with a hammer as the manual says, but still no movement, and I'm afraid to use too much force. Is there something else holding the housing in place that wont let go, or is it the driveshaft for the gear which is stuck in the block? Or something completely different? Does anyone have ideas how to get the pump lose without destroying something?

try alternate heating and cooling from inside the block, Don't try to turn it as the idler gear is on a shaft in the block. They can be stubborn but will come out eventually. If it still will not come out, then remove the idler
shaft by screwing a bolt into the tapped hole and pulling it out (cannot remember the bolt size). You can then tap it round to release it.

8x1.0 bolt size to get the idler shaft out; once you pull that (I use a socket, washers and a bolt), you can tap the pump around to free it. Always works for me.

I use two slim bladed knives (old kitchen knives) and tap them in from the sides. While the idler shaft is in position the pump has to be pulled straight out. Wear protective glasses when tapping hard metals! Tom's method looks good too especially if the idler shaft is to be removed anyway. I always turn the idler shaft 180 degrees in the block when reassembling because the unworn side brings the idler gear back to its central position.
