MG TD TF 1500 - Original Font

Nothing in the archive on this. I'm wondering what the original font was in relation to early M.G. promotion? Would it have been Times New Roman? Cheers

Cooper Black was designed by Oz Cooper in the early 20's, and is sometimes called Hamilton Cooper Black - it was originally made as metal, but evolved into a primarily wood type. It is most familiar as the font of Tootsie Roll!

I can't speak for Rod, but in my past life I was a rare book Curator for almost 30 years, working on early printed books, bindings, typography and illustration. "Oz" Cooper was a fairly important type designer of the late 20's and 30's, about whom "The Book of Oz Cooper" was published by The Typophiles.

I'm attempting to create a logo with the help of Wix and wanted to ensure that the font I used was appropriate. The words, Renovatio Noster Propositum, even came up for consideration after coming across a website that translated English into Latin. Cheers

My Latin is rusty so just had to find out what Renovatio Noster Propositum means in English:

I had 'Restoration is our goal' on the site I visited. Renovatio meaning restoration, noster 'is our' and propositum meaning goal. But then I failed Latin at school. Cheers

Chris, having restored MG vehicles for over 50 years now
I have through the years constantly researched information so that when we created the M.G. Car Company of New Zealand Ltd back in 1988 to build new MGBs on heritage body shells for the NZ Rover agents I confirmed the cooper black font style as the original and correct, so chose to use with our advertising and letter heads.

Other fonts have been used since but the original was cooper black.
