MG TD TF 1500 - Original style luggage rack basket

Recent installation of an original style luggage rack
now leads me to try to find a quality basket to use to carry miscellaneous items in. Has anyone come across a website that may have such a basket? Needs a hinged lid and not a really high profile. Then I'll need to find leather straps to hold it on, so any help thee would be appreciated also.

I'm curious as to which one you consider to be the "original style". Is it the high one that blocks vision to the rear? Bud

Bud...yes, the one that block vision to the rear.

I got the straps from saddler that makes them for the Porsche 911 groups.

Let me look him up, you have to add extra holes yourself.

Ah, yes. Had one of those blocking my rear view on our honeymoon trip from Michigan to San Diego in 1958. Bud

In the past I've suggested to my son-in-law that using his hobby in working with leather. Basically he makes bespoke saddles and ancillary leather work associated with his interest in historical US horse world I've repeatedly told him that he should market personalized leather for our cars. For example luggage straps and bonnet straps with the cars registration number embossed/hand stamped in them. The trouble is that with full time employment (he's a anethasists' assistant in a major UK hospital) and the horses his time is limited. But I'm sure there is an interest world wide in aquiring such things made in a bespoke manner/design. What do contributors think?

This is the straps I got, the rack is from Classic racks in the UK.

http://www.pvsaddleshop.com/PORSCHE%20STRAPS.htm is where I got the straps, don't ask for extra holes, just go to a shoe repair service.

Yeah but Bud, I’m guessing that since you were on your honeymoon, you would’ve had eyes only for the girl sitting next to you! Safety permitting, of course. 37 years ago, but I still remember that first official drive as Mr and Mrs.
Sorry R.A - your thread stirred up memories. John.

Personally I would choose a leather case to keep the elements out.

If you totally want to go period check sites like ebay or etsy for vintage 1950's luggage.

I have a leather one that goes under the basket, it has the change of underwear.

The basket has the wine, 2 glasses and opener, along with napkins. The cheese is wrapped in Saran wrap already on the plates.

The Porsche straps I'm sure are very pretty but the $155 price is pretty scary to me (but then I'm Scottish).

For straps I'd suggest looking on eBay. They sell huge 1.5" wide men's belts (xxxxl, which is ~56" long) for cheap, and you can get a a couple of brass belt buckles for a similar low price and simply make your own straps. I have a friend with a TD who did this and he's quite happy with the result.

The wooden box holds the canvas hood, a pair of fender covers and some towels. The basket, I now have two, hold picnic stuff. They mount 90 deg to as shown and are held in place with strong bungees. One is lined with 1" insulation for beer and the other holds edibles. They came from Pier 1 and do not block rear view.

The wooden box opens to be a picnic table and is easily removed with 6 wingnuts. Jud
