MG TD TF 1500 - Original TD Steering Wheel?

Is this an original TD steering wheel?

It's in a club member's TD. It is near perfect, excluding the black center.

He said that it had a cover on it for years that protected it from UV light. You can see lighter color near the spokes where the cover didn't cover.

Sure looks better than the solid caramel colored reproduction in my TF.

The marbled rim looks as mine did many years ago before it got all flaky.

The original boss was/is close to the colour of the instrument panel. I suspect this one has benefited from a touch of black spray paint

Remove the boss and look underneath to see if it’s black or bronze. The badge also levers out with care.

Too me that looks like one of the early Moss replacement steering wheels. Way over marbled and the wrong colors.

I believe that mine is original. Looks like golden, iridescent, ivory. Akin to the center hub colour.

Thanks guys,

The photo by LC Laurent31 is what I had understood to be the original look. I agree that the color of my friend's steering wheel does not quite match the interior.

I would be happy with either wheel, but (of course) happier with an original.

So you confirm that mine is original.
Actually it was original because there was some cracks and I sent it one week ago to a restoration store in UK. The guy claims to have the material with this particular effect. I'll post some picture when I get it back.

Was the color of TD steering wheels consistent, or were there different colors on TDs? The original steering wheel on my TF is more of a golden color with very slight variations in color, more like LC Laurent's picture. Are all TFs that color rather than the darker more marbled color of some TDs?

My TF wheel on top of two others I have acquired. The grey one is Morris, not sure about the bottom one. All TF's were this colour to the best of my knowledge. The hub paint is factory.

I do recall the then owner of Sportsparts here in Sydney in the late 60's mentioning that there was a difference between the T Type & Morris wheels but I don't remember the detail. It had more to do with the slight difference in construction rather than the colour. I came across the receipt the other day. It cost me all of $12:50 brand new! Cheers

The paint colour of the hub was consistent, but the rim and level of marbling varied considerably and every one was unique owing to the manufacturing method.

That seems to make sense Dave. It would be difficult to get a uniform marbling in each mold.

Hello,
I received my restored wheel today; A bit disapointed.
The resin is really superb but it is different from my original.

Second issue I told them to not touch the hub because it was with the correct color and matching the facia.

And I got the weel back with the hub painted with a very bright and yellow gold ! horrible. Fortunately I still had the bronze paint.

"The resin is really superb but it is different from my original."

That's better than a lot I have seen. Look at the top wheel of Matthews above. Your new one looks pretty similar.

IIRC the originals had a bit of pearlescence to them. Very hard to duplicate that without going over the top.
