MG TD TF 1500 - OT - End of an Era

A bit off topic: For what it's worth and not supporting Lutz, but I don't necessarily disagree with his thoughts here:

"The vehicles, however, will no longer be driven by humans because in 15 to 20 years — at the latest — human-driven vehicles will be legislated off the highways."

Bull.

I see the end of gasoline sooner rather than later, but self-driving modules? Mr. Lutz should come to the mountains of NC or go out to Arizona or fight his way through a 5 month winter of nothing but snow and blizzards in North Dakota and see how people really live with their cars and he'll realize that what he's dreaming is nuts.

One thing for sure... technological advances only succeed when they are BETTER than the current option.

"technological advances only succeed when they are BETTER than the current option."

Then why is Windows 10 still in existence? Why is it better than Windows 7? (Answer: it is not!) (forget 8 ever existed and they skipped 9).

I said advances only succeed when better, but not all better technology is guaranteed success. Not all early motorcars were more reliable than a horse, but the motorcar eventually won.

VHS was not an advancement over Beta but eventually millions of VHS video units were sold because video recording overall was a technological leap over waiting for re-runs.

To fine tune your Windows 7/10 postulate... laptops are technologically better than manual typewriters even though a better version of Windows co-exists with a lesser version.

Think bigger.

Our cars are still mainframe computers. A new transportation system will have to be a smartphone. That leap took 60 years.

" travel will be in standardized modules."

This guy grew up watching The Jetsons.

People aren't willing to give up that kind of freedom on a wide scale. Imagine how inconvenient it would be to have to order a cab to go from store to store.

A lot of people will eventually have self-driving cars, but they will always have a manual option, and most will be personally owned. Most people don't want to take a public transportation vehicle, they want their own car with their own stuff in it. And they don't want it to look like what everyone else has. Or to have other people's germs all over the inside. The industry will change in a lot of ways just like it always has, but we won't see an end to self-driving cars in our lifetime.

By the way, Windows 10 isn't a new technology, it's just a new version of an existing product!

Steam cars v petrol anyone?

Bob Lutz is the ultimate car guy and quite knowledgeable as well as opinionated. Father of the Viper, owned a TC at some point. Many people including Capt. Sully Sullenburger think the autonomous car is way off in the future if ever. However, kids don't get their licenses until they have to if ever, the average age at car races, shows, etc. is getting really old. My daughter is home from NYC for a few days and she hates to drive. She does indeed take transit from store to store- cab/Uber/subway. I do think gas powered cars in urban areas will be a minority in a few years. IMHO, no matter how awful human drivers are, I have spent way too many hours of my life dealing with crashed/broken computers at work and personally. Think about how well your business network or iphones work after MS or Apple updates- terrifying to think about updating your self driving car! George

I agree with George...I couldn’t wait to drive when I was a kid but my grandkids prefer being ferried around. They can sit and text and watch videos while Mom and Dad take them hither and yon...I’m sure they’d prefer to “leave the driving to us” (to paraphrase the old Greyhound slogan) for the rest of their lives.

Well I vote for going back to the horse, to living and working in villages that have a community, a pub/brewery, a flour mill/bakery, farm / butcher / dairy.

Modern life is mad - we spend way too much time rushing from our dormitory urbanisation into the cities to work.

Stop that and we wouldn't need trains of pods rushing us about...

... anyway, what happens when someone hacks into the computer running the whole shebang? Cos someone will, one day.
