MG TD TF 1500 - Painting Bonnet Underneath the Center Strip?
Looking for tips about painting the channels in my TF bonnet that are below the chrome center strip. Same for TC & TD. Don't want new paint to fill the channels and interfere with the center strip. I believe that I have cleaned the channels down to the original paint, which is in surprisingly good shape. So, should I just touch up a few spots, then mask the channels before sending to paint? They are hidden by the chrome center strip. Thanks for your help. Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |

You just need enough paint to keep it from rusting and don't want it to bind up with too much paint. I like the idea of leaving the original paint there as you know it's the right thickness and it would be a fun documentation point. BTW you are going to grease this anyway so rust is rarely a problem. |

I don’t grease my bonnet tops and I’ve had some bonnets with multiple paint layers and never experienced any binding. Except with the reproduction center strips. They don’t have the correct profile. |

Lonnie Mine was with PPG epoxy primer and paint. No issues. Frank TF1414 |

Mine were painted as per the photo with no problems during assembly or after. The bonnet works perfectly with no binding of the painted surfaces. The white in the groves is compound dust. All my sheet metal pieces were painted and finished this way, assembled after.

Thanks guys. Guess I was over-thinking the task. The channels in my bonnet had a lot of dirt and crud in them. I cleaned out the crud. Test fitted the chrome strip. Nice fit. Glad to know that new paint won’t cause a problem. Lonnie TF7211 |

Another reason not to lubricate the hinge. |
