MG TD TF 1500 - Painting over chrome
PO had the tool box cover chromed. It is not a bad look, but I am working to bring my TD back to close to what it was originally. What prep would be needed to get paint to adhere to chrome? Rough it up and an etching primer? If it does not work well to paint over chrome, if anyone has a painted one and likes the chrome look, I am up for a trade. |

Take the chrome off. A plater should almost do it for free since they are getting the nickel and chrome back. :-) You can sand it with 400 paper but chrome is real hard. |

When I dechromed my HD I sand blasted the snot out of the chrome to give it tooth and proceeded with the usual prep. Hadn’t an issue with the paint sticking. Bill Chasser TD-4834 |

You'd like to think so Chris but over here they charge almost as much to strip as they do to plate! I de-chromed my rocker cover using a palm sander. Took the precaution of wearing a quality face mask with a cartridge filter, gloves, disposable overalls & showered afterwards. May not have been necessary but chromium can be problematic. Used an etch primer prior to painting. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

I can run it through the blast cabinet. Looking on line at removing chrome, it looks like acids or alkali will do it, but blasting is probably easier and safer. |

Acid is best so that you don’t generate a lot of chromium dust. Builders merchants over here sell dilute hydrochloric acid to clean cement mortar from bricks. Dave H |

A good long soak in my molasses de rusting tank took the chrome off my wheel spinners along with the rust! Chris |

I can see that working as molasses can act as a chelating agent (sweeps up metal ions). Might work fastest on chrome that is not in great condition. Dave H |

Molasses -Interesting. Worth a try |

brake fluid removes chrome. |

Bruce Have a "Google" very easy to make your own electrolysis tank using some scrap copper pipe, some wiring, a DC source, diluted Hydrochloric and a plastic bucket. Did all my door hinges with little trouble after PO had them chromed. Graeme |
