MG TD TF 1500 - Paul Jennings - TF front carb removal
Hey Paul - I removed and installed the front carb on my TF three times in the past couple of days and thought of you ... You always say that you have a difficult time removing your front air cleaner and carb. So I made a few measurements that may help you. I haven't adjusted my engine stabilizer or mounts. This is the way the engine sat in the car when I bought it almost two years ago. Don't know if your engine position could be tweaked a little. When the front carb is installed and air cleaner removed, the top center of the inlet (directly below the suction chamber) is 3-9/16" from the side panel. Measurement to the sidepanel directly under the horizontal lip for the hood (bonnet). The top stud for the front carb is 1-5/8" from the intake maifold to the tip. There are still three threads showing after installing the carb + insulator + two gaskets + thick washer + full size nut. The air cleaner and carb each came off in about a minute. The front mounting bolt on my air cleaner is a factory original tall head slotted hex bolt. Don't know how I could remove the cleaner if it didn't have that bolt. Lonnie TF7211 |

Thanks Lonnie. Yes the front air cleaner is a pain, as we all know. I've had mine off quite a few times and have pretty much figured out the easiest way to do the PITA job. I have a set of old side panels that aren't the best looking ones around, but since I'm pretty fair with sheet metal, I'm going to modify them and make the upper portion removable. It's been done before, so it's nothing new. Be interesting to try. PJ |

Have you seen Jim Melvin's suggested modification of the panels? http://www.ttalk.info/TFPanelMod.html Bud |

Cant recommend Buds suggestion high enough, done properly only the most informed observer would notice the modification. |

While restoring my '54 TF I decided to cut the hood sides for better access to the engine. This is what it looks like with the 'upper' panel removed. With the panel installed you can't tell it's cut. I'm very glad I did it.

When I fitted a five speed box to my TF I simply bought a bell housing and made up all the other parts myself including the front engine mount. Knowing the problem with front carb clearance I arranged for the mount to shift the engine to the left slightly. The car runs fine and I do have extra space Jan T |
