MG TD TF 1500 - Plug in gear remote control cover

What is the function of the cover plug with spring and plunger in the remote control cover? Is there anything adjustable?

W_Mueller

The brass plunger cap is spring loaded to rub on the shaft to reduce the rattle noise.

Winfried,
The plunger is easily replaced with brass stock. There are however other causes for the rattle.

The remote housing does wear. I made up a bearing for mine using a cable gland.

The plate also tends to rattle. I added a small screw to prevent this. The pins that hold the gear stick were also replaced by M8 grub screws. Difficult to get the old pins out without access to a milling machine.

Okay - the spring in my remote looks worn and the plunger seems unavailable. The plug is fine.

Declan - do you have such a brass plunger?

Here's a drawing on how to make up the grub screw.

Winfried,
The part no. for the plunger acc. Moss is AEG3124. The Morris Minor and Spridget use the same part no. for their plungers. I do not know at the moment if the dimensions are the same. My original gearbox and remote is over at my mate's place so I cannot measure it until later this week. I can make one for you no problem but I would need to measure it up. Moss lists the spring as AEG3123.

It is a failed attempt to damp the gear lever resonance/chatter. Due to the downward pressure, it is very effective in wearing the un-bushed aluminum housing bore to an oval shape. Abingdon Spares lists plunger and spring available. When the housing is worn oval, it messes up the geometry of the shifter shaft, causing binding and problems. George

Declans image is exactly how I did mine, getting the pins out wasn't all that bad once the penned over aluminum was removed, which I did with a Dremmel and end cutter. PJ

Wear also occurs on the Gear Lever's bottom ball where it fits in the actuating lever. Additionally, wear occurs where the hemi spherical ball of the Gear Lever rests in the aluminium remote control housing. You can fit a Nitrile ring to the semi spherical 'ball' by placing the Gear Lever in a lathe and turning a groove in which the ring can sit. This has the effect of both taking up any wear and acts as a 'cushioning',anti vibration device. Works well.

Of course,as George B has indicated, renewing the main shaft and bushing the aluminium remote control body also assists in reducing the annoying vibration emanating from this area of the car.

Some have had a reduction in vibration noise by re adjusting the engine timing.

Hi Guys,

Whatever the purpose of the plug ....... If you have difficulty getting into gear or the gearlever feels sticky, get some oil into this plug. On a couple of occasions over the last 15 years, I have felt "sludgy" gear selection in the race TC. A few drops of oil down through the plug in question, made a HUGE difference. Difficult to oil with the rubber cover in place in a road TC but essential to lubricate (possibly from below). I guess the same applies to TD and TF.

Rob, (Porthos?)
do you have a source/dimension for the nitrile ring?
Mine is in pieces ATM so it's a good time to include yet another mod/upgrade.

Hi Chris,

It has been a while since I last restored a Remote Control Unit,
however I think the Nitrile ring I used was 30mm in outside diameter
and 2.5mm in section.

So that the Gear Lever can move freely gear changing, the position of the groove on the 'hemi spherical ball' of the lever is critical. The centre of the machined groove is 5/16"down from the top of the ball ie. 5/16" from the surface on which the tapered end of the anti rattle
spring bears.

The Nitrile ring should be available from Bearing and Seal Suppliers.

Hope this assists.

Thanks Rrob,
I will get onto that when I get back from an upcoming trip to the UK, provided I don't find too many other bits over there that I just can't do without.
