MG TD TF 1500 - Polishing SU Carbs

I would like to polish the aluminum on the SU Carbs and the manifold. When I remove the two screws on the carb pots will they just lift off or am I going to end up with parts everywhere. Never seen the inside of one of these. From what I see is the part diagrams it appears that the post are part of a piston assembly or something. Any direction appreciated for a newbie. Love this car. Had a 1966 MGB 50 years ago.

Yes they simply lift off
Take care with the piston below it though, if that comes out the needle is attached at the bottom and could be bent if not handled correctly

hello Gary. dont'do anything inside the pots or
with the pistons. They are matched together.

Do not mix them up. Keep the pots with the same pieces /carb. They are matched Also heavy handed polishing can distort the castings causing piston clearance issues.

And while they are off you might clean the inside surface and the ribbed surface of the piston with carb cleaner. These tend to get gunked up over time.
John Quilter (TD8986)

Do not mix, but I'd recommend also to put them back in the same direction.

Ok so ok to remove carefully, replace in exactly same position and polish to a fare the well. Thanks you once again.

To reinforce what John wrote regarding cleaning of the inner works with carb cleaner.. use nothing more aggressive than a soft cloth in conjunction with the carb cleaner.

Gary, be cautious with that 'fare thee well'. The heat from power buffers can distort the pots. Bud

Thanks for all the heads up. The internal cleaning will be done carefully with a basic wipe with carb cleaner and cotton rag. Exterior with a 3m mild abrasive cloth and then a shine with Mothers. Interior not a concern unless needed. Just wanted a little eye candy on the exterior. Thanks again.

Gary, the PO of my '72 MGB put chrome plated covers on the HIF4s. I don't know if chrome covers are available for the H2s on out T series cars but if bling is the goal, it may be worth looking. That way there is no need to do anything potentially dangerous to your carbs.

WARNING! The clearance between the pistons and pots is MINISCULE. IF YOU DROP THE POT, you may be looking for a replacement. Don't ask me how I know. I can tell you, it can take many hours of precision sanding to save it.

When polishing the pot on a buffing wheel, slip a rod through it and hang on for dear life.

I am going to do the polishing with pots in place using a dremel polish bit and Mothers. Not looking for a mirror but just a good cleaning. Thanks for all of the suggestions and warnings.
