MG TD TF 1500 - Polyurethane bushes
I would be interested to know what anyone thinks about using polyurethane bushes in the rear spring shackles. The rubber today to me is absolute rubbish. Any thoughts. John...Sydney |

Agree about the rubber John. Mine is splitting all over the place & I've yet to drive the car. Rebuilt the rear end about 4 years ago. If they're available in black & poly is suitable, I'm up for a set. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Check with your supplier and see if they do a softer urethane compound. Ploybush in the UK do. Makes a difference to ride quality. Dave |

As Dave advises it appears you use polyurethane bushes of a softer durometer rating i.e 60,75 or 85. I am yet to find a good supplier here in Sydney with the right softness as well as black in colour. I will post my findings should I be successful. John...Sydney |

I did a lot of looking prior to getting my sets for the B. I went with Superflex out of the UK. http://www.superflex.co.uk/. My reasons for this choice. They use stainless steel sleeves, and lathe the bushing for a perfect fit. I have had them in the B for 6 years and they have held out perfectly. Slid in without any pressing and give a great ride. Hoping to use them in the TD, but I do note they do not specifically list the TD/TF. A lot of others including the YA/YT so they probably have them. Under products go to BMC |

I have used them front and rear on two TCs, a TD, a TF and an MGB. I use black. They look stock, work very well and last. I doubt they will wear out in my lifetime. Be well, David |

It is not to difficult to make your own poly bushes. Here's a photo of the tie bar bushes I made for my Morris Minor and they have been on there for six years with no problems. They are hand cast and 60° shore and compress nicely. The one's on the market are rock hard and not fit for purpose. Regards Declan ![]() |

they don't look crude at all... where do you source the raw materials ? I used standard black pokybushes in my rear springs and they work fine so far. Easy to mount, that's for sure, slides right in. I cannot compare the elasticity, though, the 60 year old rubber ones were definitely not softer. rgds, Mike |

Still trying to source black polyurethane bushes here in Sydney.I looks as though I can purchase a round length of the black polyurethane therefore I may have to do that and machine the bushes myself. Declan, would you by any chance have measurement details of the bushes> Thanks. John |

John, I have emailed you my drawing for the TD/TF shackle bushes and spring pad. Machining poly could prove difficult. Mike, The bushes in the Photo were made from Urethane from a company called Weicon. http://www.weicon.com/pages/en/products/adhesive/2c-adhesive/urethane.php You can buy Polyurethane from a company called Polytek. https://www.polytek.com/ I can give you an address in the UK and possibly here in Germany as a lot of these products are classified as dangerous chemicals and not every supplier will send them overseas due to flight regulations. Regards Declan |

For anyone interested in making such bushes and it is actually quite easy and a very satisfying bad weather preoccupation, be aware, that the colour of the polybushes currently being sold has no direct bearing on the shore grade and varies from supplier to supplier. This is generally mis-understood. Dyes are available from the chemical suppliers mentioned above. Regards Declan |

John A web search shows Rowe Trading Co in Sth Aust supplies Shore 60A and Shore 80 Trial kits for $48.10 each. http://www.rowetrading.com.au/index.php?route=product/category&path=73_89 Declan, are these products suitable for the bushes? The kits produce a translucent clear amber color, but they suggest can be easily coloured. cheers Stuart |

Stuart, They are indeed suitable. You will just need to make a mould like the simple one in my photo above. Regards Declan |

You can make all sorts of bushes and seals with the poly. Here's a photo of an experimental one piece re-usable oil sump and bearing cap seal we made for the Morris Minor to overcome the dreaded cork gasket problem. We never got around to testing it so the project got moth balled. Regards ![]() |
