MG TD TF 1500 - Possible Moss Motors Scam
Dear All,
Just a quick note and possible warning. I have attempted to purchase items for my car via Moss Motors in the US - circa $3,500. I was advised via email that I had been randomly selected by Moss Motors to verify myself as a customer. That entailed me not being able to make payment with a credit card, but instead being asked to make payment only via direct bank transfer - or the order would be cancelled. I have never had the trouble in the US or the UK with credit card payments or requests for verification (in this manner). I am not sure if it was a scam (inside or outside) or not - but I elected to cancel my order and not risk transferring money that would not be covered by the mandatory insurance cover that afforded by Visa and Mastercard. Kind regards, Ross |

I would call them about this email you received and if it is legit or not. I wouldn't transfer money either. "Randomly selected" sounds fishy |

I'd definitely let them know about it. The email was such a specific thing that I would suspect your local network has a nefarious IT at work, or perhaps a bit of malicious software. The only other possibility I can think of is a worm in the Moss server, but I'd say that's unlikely. |

Perhaps a consequence of the trade war perhaps ?. Stranger things have happened.... Just sayin Tony |

If not Moss Motors - can any one recommend another parts supplier in the US - with competitive pricing? |

Perhaps it is a policy instituted because of the political unrest in Hong Kong. Or maybe Moss has been the victim of credit card fraud from Hong Kong. Or it's a scam. The above advice seems sound to me. Tim |

It seems that the thing to do is to forward the e-mail to Moss Motors for them to see if it's legitimate or not. They'll be quick to tell you one way or the other. If it's fraud they'll want to know because it's costing them business. BobbyG |

With the £ sterling suffering because of the Brexit fiasco had you considered buying via Moss in the UK or better still if a member of the Octagon Car Club who are often even more competitive. |

Sadly the pound recovered a little, BUT, while it was in the tank somebody scored 5 wire wheels. Thanks Boris, I think! |

By way of an update - I have been advised by a road racing club member in Australia - that he was also requested to make a wire transfer for Moss Motors USA. Furthermore, he stated that it was not a scam - but an internal policy that they were implementing.
I also made contact with Moss Motors USA - who advised me that it was not a scam, and that they were inflexible with the policy. I guess the only word of warning to come out of this is that making a wire transfer to Moss Motors USA does not afford the general insurance and payment protection offered by visa and mastercard. The shipment and merchantable quality of the goods ordered are at your own risk. |

Try Brown and Gammons in the UK also |

Will they accept Paypal? You'd still have credit card protection. Tim |
Timothy Burchfield |
Hi Tim, I was told paypal was not an option - only a wire transfer. I guess it is worse for them - they lost my business. thank you all for the recommendations and names of alternate parts suppliers! |

Not sure I understand what's going on here. Moss excepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, certified check and money order. They don't except PayPal yet. Never had a problem with Moss and I've bought a bunch of stuff from them over the years. Just got an order last week! Paid with major credit card! PJ |

PJ, the issue is N Ross is located overseas and in a region in turmoil. I'm sure Moss' payment policy regarding certain regions is based on actual instances of fraud or non payment. A company doesn't limit payment options arbitrarily. Tim |
