MG TD TF 1500 - Powder Coat Leaf Springs

Hello,

I have my leaf springs apart. They have no rust on them and plan to take emery cloth to clean them up.
Currently planning to put a chassis black primer on the individual leaves and then once assembled, put a chassis black paint on them - maybe POR-15.

The question is- Can they be powder coated?

Best,
-Michael O'Brien

I powder coat mine and have no issues.

So I am assuming the heat required for power coating is not high enough to affect the tempering.
I heard that power coating wire wheels is a no no as it affects the spokes. Yes or no?

Temperatures for the Powder coating process only reach 350-450 maximum.

However, the powder coating is not very flexible, so when the springs flex, the powder coating can crack and start to fall off.

I’ve not experienced any failures from using powder coating be it on leaf or coil springs I’ve beaten powder coated sheetmetal with a 4 lb hammer and still no failure.

If the powder coat cracks, rust can form underneath and cause problems. I've used POR-15 with good results. I used it because it cannot crack and doesn't allow rust to migrate underneath even if it wears through.

The primary reasons to not power coat wire wheels are maintenance-related. If you need to adjust spoke tension, you will crack the powder cost and water may get trapped in the nipple. Also, matching the finish if you need to replace spokes. Powder coat is thick, so although the finish is nice it can hide cracks in the rim. Just something else to keep in mind.

I powder coated mine and it is very tough. However, my TD is not in service yet...time will tell. I think powder coating is used on hot rod and motorcycle springs all the time.

I powder coated mine 15 years ago and so far no problems.
