MG TD TF 1500 - Prices of TDs

Have in mind buying a TD in the near future, but have not found anyone who can give any trustworthy information on how much they cost nowadays. In ads they are very highly valued, but there are rarely any bids and if so, these are very low?? How much do I have to pay for a near concurs or at least in very good condition, preferably in Europe, or with freight included?
YS Strom

Look on the MG Octagon website and see what has sold and what hasn’t. Bear in mind that selling price is almost always less than asking price (obviously).

YS, Declan should be able to give you some info on European M.G. TD's. Cheers

YS Strom, After 10 years of ownership it looks like we'll be selling our TD. Drop me an email and we can at least have a chat. ..... Chris

YS,
You would be looking at paying something in the region of 25.000€ for a good car.
There are quite a few in Denmark in that price catagory.

You might also consider importing one from the US, where they are obviously more plentiful than in Scandinavia. All in all, especially when compared with other British cars, TD values have remained remarkably low and steady, and a decent car can be bought over here for well less than $25,000.

Thank you all for interesting information.
It appears a good TD will cost around EUR 30 000 or more.

The popularity and value of any pre 1960s car is on the decline. I have been trying to sell a 1933 MG J2 for over a year and very few people are intetested. Compare this to Ford Escort Mexicos and Mini Coopers which a few years ago you would find in a srap yard and they are now advertised at £50,000! This applies to all sorts of things. We had a superb roll top desk which at one time would have sold for £1000. It was too big for us so I asked a local auction house to sell it. They said transportation would cost more than I could sell it for! Eventually I sold it on eBay to a single bidder for £80. Compare that to UK G Plan and Ercol furniture from the 1960s which sells for a fortune.

YS,
Tom is right in that the prices are far lower in USA. When you consider the freight costs, the import duty and then the VAT on top of all that it would still work out cheaper in the long run. The only problem being is that it is not just around the corner so you can't check it out yourself unless you fly over -perhaps combined with a holiday. Photos can be very deceiving. You need somebody you can trust based locally to source and check the car for you. Organizing the freight is not the major issue. Finding somebody you can trust spending your hard earned money is the problem. Not everybody would take on that responsibility.

My guess is that you can find a very decent car in the US for $15,000.

Thanks Tom
Will definitely make a trip to US worthwhile.
Any idea of shipping and other costs for import to Europ?

Read an interesting article on collector/antique cars today discussing values.

According to the article, values of most collector/antique cars crested in the U.S.A. after 2014 and have been decreasing the last 3 years. There are more cars for sale now than people interested in buying them.

Generation X and Millennials have less interest in cars than Baby Boomers, especially older cars. The number of new license application is declining although the population is still increasing.

Many current owners of collector/antique cars reported they no longer enjoyed driving their older cars on congested highways with overly aggressive drivers.

There was some speculation that the collector car industry (and associated parts suppliers) will continue to collapse and might not be viable in 25 years. This could be exacerbated if new safety and clean-air regulations prevent older cars from even being registered.

Dear Mr , Strom,

It is not my intension to hijack your tread here but to

If prices are declining it might not be a good idea to buy a TD now.

Making money is not my main goal, but it is not to lose too much either.

The bid of EUR 15.5 for this superb looking Dutch TD might be an indication that the market is weak for this kind of vehicles. https://encheres.catawiki.eu/kavels/16266663-mg-td-roadster-1953

Interesting to hear that cars pre 1960 are on the way down. Bought a RR SC 1956 times back and are now planning to sell it, but will get max EUR 40 000, but a MB Pagoda 1966 I bought for less than half is now worth around EUR 100 000 - should have kept that one instead. Not to mention some old Italian sports cars.
Oriental carpets, copper pans, oak and pine furniture among other things have dropped a lot in value here, like the oak table and J2 mentioned above. Afraid most of our beloved vehicles might go the same way in the future.

It is difficult predicting the antiques market, but it has changed fast lately. But let's enjoy using our cars as long as we can.
YS Strom

Jan T, could you send me information on the J2 you are selling? I'm loving my TD and the bug is biting, so there is an itch to consider a prewar MG. There are not many of these in the USA, but I am in the UK regularly so could be interested. simon_grif@msn.com would be a good place to send some photos or a link to any on-line advertising for the car.

With regards to TD prices I purchased my 53 just over a year ago. My experience having looked for over a year is that there are a lot of not "restored" cars missing all kinds of original bits with incorrect interiors and non original dash arrangements in the mid teens. Really well done cars seem to be in the mid $20K's and some even higher. The cars that are really hard to find are ones that have not been messed with very much and are somewhat original, at least that was my experience.

Good luck
Simon

Hi Simon,

I sent you a personal email but had trouble with your address. Eventually I managed to send it by putting a dot between simon and grif. Hope you received it and not some other simon griffin.

Thank you all for very interesting views and links. They have given me - and probably many others - a more balanced picture of the prices for TDs and the trend for antique cars in general - even though a sad development.
YS Strom

Hi Jan, I did not get it. simon_grif@msn.com is the correct address it is an underscore _ not a dot :-)

And always remember that there is a huge difference between what an ever-hopeful seller asks, and what the car is actually worth. I am discouraged seeing average TDs with slick new paint and a bit and a bob of imprivement here and there, asking price $25,000.

I would much rather spend $15,000 for a less than perfect car, and spend another $5,000 doing everything it needs.

There were roughly 30,000 TDs made, and enough still remain that prices will remain stable for the time being. They may well go up a bit, but it is unlikely they will go down.

Take a look at Hemmings Listings. There are a number of TD's in Norway. Some in a reasonable price.

F Y I - If helpful, I sold my '51 TD in April, 2016. It fetched $30,000.00. I really did not want to sell, but I had other bills to pay, AND I still had my '54 TF. My TD was a beaut, just under concours condition! Perhaps a resurgence in popularity will occur before too long - we need the youngsters to fall in love with these wonderful LBCs! Good Luck, Jerry
