MG TD TF 1500 - Proper Position
What is the proper position for this piece of the firewall found on both sides of the car?

I thought it was supposed to be flat against the inner metal, but seeing yours is bent up like mine, I am not sure. |

Flattened and on top of the mainframe. |

Anyone have a picture? |

Bill -
I'm also a little baffled with the "proper position." I believe that my TF is correct. Been struggling to get the space between the front of the body frame and the back of the firewall correct. Here is how my TF looks. The tab that extends from the bottom of the firewall is flat and points toward the back of the car. The front of the body frame sits ontop of the tab. There is a hole in the tab and in the body frame for a rivet. I have a screw through the hole while I'm restoring the car. The holes in the tab and in the body frame create a specific distance between the firewall and body frame for the side rails. The distance appears to be too wide on my car, especially on the right side. Lonnie TF7211 Photos: > Cockpit view left side with screw in rivet hole. > Bottom view left side ![]() ![]() |

On closer look, I see that the tab on your TD firewall is different from the one on my TF firewall. And you don't appear to have a hole for a rivet in your TD body frame. Also no holes for nails in the vertical piece of the tab on my TF. Here are a couple more pics. Lonnie TF7211 > Cockpit view right side, no side rails. Body frame pushed forward past the rivet hole in the firewall. > Bottom view right side. (sorry not in the same orientation as similar picture in previous post.) ![]() ![]() |

Hmmmm
Glad you started this thread Bill. I've been struggling with the fit of the firewal, front side rails, and front quarter panels for three years. I was working on it again today. Can someone confirm the position of the firewall tab and body frame on a TF? Can the space for the front side rails be adjusted? Or just drill another hole for the rivet to adjust the space? Maybe my TF tab should be on top of the body frame. I think that it will fit on top or bottom (gotta look at it.) The thin metal of the tab is more prone to rust and crud if below the body frame. The thicker steel of the body frame could withstand the elements better. But of course the car has a wood substructure, so I don't guess that protection from water damage was a major concern! The last two TD pics are pretty clear. The tab goes on top of the frame member. Anyway, that’s the way I am going to do it. Mine may have been bent by the guy who replaced some of my timbers. Thanks to all! Bill |

TF owners: Does the tab on the TF firewall go below the body frame, or above it? Thanks, Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |

Take a look at the pics for TD11272. There is also one from the bottom but this one is pretty clear.![]() |

Lonnie, TFs have the tab going below the body frame. Also, originally, this tab on each side of the car, was affixed with a rivet which had a large flat head. The tail of the rivet was peened on the inside of the car ie. the flat head is placed against the tab. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Thanks Rob, I should have looked at Frank's photos of TF9052 on Chris' site. Perfect photo of the tab and rivet. BTW - photos in this thread illustrate the changes in the front quarter panels and firewall between TD and TF. Lonnie TF7211 ![]() |
