MG TD TF 1500 - Protect inside of horns from rust

I took the Lucas Windtone horns off of my TF to clean and paint. Good news, they still work. I removed the rust from the diaphragm, but it is pitted. The original plating on the base plate, diaphragm, and armature is failing.

How can I protect them?

> Will galvanized paint protect the base plate any better than enamel?
> Is it advisable to zinc plate the diaphragm and armature (DIY)? Can't leave in acid bath very long. Must completely neutralize beneath the armature.
> If not zinc plating, is there any other way to prevent the diaphragm from rusting?

Thanks for your help,

Consider using gun bluing on the plate. The ones I have see appeared to be blued.
Bruce Cunha

Thanks Bruce. Bluing may be a good choice for the diaphragm. Even cold bluing is better than nothing.

Looks like the baseplate is zinc plated or has a protective paint.

Hi Lonnie

If you need some replacement parts I have a bin full of TD/TF horns.

When I restore the Windtone horns, I usually coat the internals in lacquer after removing all rust. Not too much on the diaphragm otherwise it will dampen the sound. It usually works for longer than I will own the car.

Gary - I’ll call you if I screw up my horns while trying to restore them. Good to know I have a replacement standing by.

Lew - I zinc plated one of the diaphragms a few minutes ago. Looks pretty good. Now comes the hard part ... cleaning and protecting the base plate. Lacquer may be the answer. Won’t know how well I did until I assemble and test.

Here's an update on my horns.

I cleaned the rust off of the base plate as well as I could then brush plated bottom of the base plate with zinc. I feel that the base plate and the diaphragm are protected better than if painted.
