MG TD TF 1500 - Quality of Tools

After about 5 years of use, and certainly much abuse, my Dewalt angle grinder stopped working. I took off the end covers and found the brushes had worn away to practically nothing. £2 spent on eBay has seen new new ones in the post and a fully working angle grinder. I have dismantled many electric drills, hedge trimmers and the like to replace brushes but have never seen anything that comes close to the quality of the Dewalt. The brush holders are superbly engineered and it takes seconds to replace worn brushes. When you open the unit up no springs or clips fall out and the covers simply snap back into place. A very impressive bit of kit.

I love DeWalt tools. Milwaukee tools are similarly well built, Jan. I don't know if they still do it, but on the ones I bought many years ago Milwaukee even included a new set of brushes in the handle! :)

Here is an interesting Canadian Troop who takes things apart to see how they are really put together on U-Tube.
He always make me laugh as well, as he has an interesting turn of phrase.
He has some home truths about Milwaukee and DeWalt and others. Well the modern ones anyway.
Seems they are all made by the same corporation now. hummm.
There is stuff you should be aware off that the marketing folks will not tell you.
The older tools were of cause different. But they wear out - right.... Your expectations maybe dashed when you see what they make now.

Milwaukee is my first choice is corded tools. Dewalt is first for battery-powered. It isn't just about what manufacturing plant made the tool, it's the ergonomics and components used. Makita makes a decent cordless drill also, but I've never been happy with their battery quality.

I sell most of the mentioned brands at Home Depot. In order of customer satisfaction and my personal preferences are:
Most Milwaukee (for sheer power)
Ridgid (for power and warranty including the batteries)
High end DeWalt (most are US made)
Compact DeWalt (ditto on US made)
Blue Makita (tool good, but batteries are the issue, sometimes confusing on which fits which tool)
White Makita
Ryobi (inconsistent quality) (I like selling Ryobi because I know the customer will be back in 2 years for a replacement)
Black and Decker

Nobody speaking up for Bosch? I've had really good use out of Bosch cordless drills, impact drivers, and saws
and have pretty well decided to stick with them.
I agree completely with remarks on concentration of tool brand ownership: Black and Decker and others have bought up trusted brands and sell cost-reduced low end stuff on the basis of a lot of once-respected brand names.

Bosch is the worst cordless drill/tool I have ever owned..not a scientific survey..only my personal experience and I will never buy another. Build quality, tool and battery life were both very poor.

Interesting conversation. I own a Dewalt corded multi-speed drill and mini grinder. I own a Milwaukee battery driver, and won a set of 7 Makita battery power tools.

For corded tools, the Dewalts are great. The Milwaukee battery driver is a fantastic drill and driver. Battery life is fantastic.

The power of the Makita tools surprised me. Excellent power, I use the impact gun, the hammer drill, the power saw for a ton of things. Battery is slightly less than the Milwaukee, but not by much.

I bought a Hitachi 4" angle grinder in 1981. It has ground, cut and wire-brushed through many vintage and classic cars, and I still use it. 35 years of good (lucky?) service. I use mainly old 'Sidchrome' brand tools, Australian made but now I believe they are owned by Stanley. The oldest were my Father's, now about a 70 year old Whitworth socket set. One was replaced under the original life-time warranty.

I've got a heavy duty corded DeWalt drill which will surely outlive me. I've heavily used my Hitachi corded drill for wire brushing and it now has taken a decade of abuse so far. Its fairly light and well balanced. My Makita cordless impact driver is a terrific tool which saves lots of time and effort.
