MG TD TF 1500 - Really picky question
Ok, I know this sounds like way to picky a question, but it came up today while I was installing a starter in the TD. Since the engine and transmission on the TD were painted maroon. Would the head of the two bolts that hold the starter in have been painted maroon? I am thinking the bolts may have been in the bell housing when it was painted and the starter added after. |

Assembly logic is telling me not maroon. Although there is evidence pointing to TF generators being assembled before painting and being protected with a sleeve to keep the main cylinder black, but exposing the pulley and sliding link to the red paint. Not sure if that can be applied to TD starter motor though. Matthew. |

This is probably the best example of an unpainted starter and does not show the sleeve treatment Matthew mentioned.![]() |

Bruce the bolts were likely the natural blacken finished as the accessories where added after painting. I have found no paint on the engines in my inventory of cars that I have/had. Just my two cents Bill Chasser |

Bruce - I recently had a very tired but original TD in the shop, and the heads of the bolts were un-painted. Logic speaks to them being that way originally. Had the starter been painted red with the rest of the engine I would say red, but they were not. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Thanks, Unpainted makes sense also. They would have grabbed the two bolts when the starter was put i and they would not have been painted. |
